Review of Taking Sides

20160121_193149_Pano~2Intense and riveting! Last night we attended a performance of Taking Sides at the Levis JCC Sandler Center. The award-winning drama by Ronald Harwood opened on Broadway in October 1996. The play is a fictionalized account of the real life post-war investigation in 1946 into German conductor Wilhelm Furtwangler. Did he actually help Jewish musicians escape Germany or support the Third Reich during the height of the war?
The play explores the themes of courage, justice and liberty.  The lead actor Jeffrey Bruce does an excellent job of portraying the emotions of Wilhelm Furtwangler, a proud man defending himself against a relentless foe. Tony Rein is passionate in his role as Major Steve Arnold, a man determined to convict the conductor of war crimes. Their story takes place in Major Arnold’s office in the American Zone of occupied Berlin. Be aware this play contains very strong language.
20160121_193201~2Taking Sides was presented in association with Chicken Coop Theatre and in partnership with Next Generations. Next Generations is a non profit dedicated to promoting holocaust education and ensuring the well being of survivors in need. The Chicken Coop Theatre has a full spring season including Rock of Stages; Grease; and Love, Loss and What I Wore. Call 561-558-2512 for tickets.

Songs for a new world

Songs-Cover-PhotoToday we had the opportunity to see a unique and captivating show by the Marquee Theater Company. Songs for a new world, with music and lyrics by Jason Robert Brown, tells the stories of 2 men and 2 women trying to achieve their hopes and dreams.
This intimate musical has a very simple production. The set consisted of a cityscape and a pair of black stairs that were moved throughout the show. The actors wore black boots, jeans and denim tops. The focus was on their personal journeys as told through the songs.

All the performers had beautiful voices that expressed hope, heartbreak, bitterness and humor. They sang of love lost and found and dreams dashed. Also appearing on stage were dancers that expressed the singer’s inner emotions and played the parts of love interests.
Songs for a new world is playing now through December 20th at the Next Level Performing Arts Black Box. Tickets are $28 each and $18 for students. Upcoming performances include Jekyll & Hyde and Footloose at the West Boca Performing Arts Theater and Nunsense at Next Level.

New Theater on 441 in Parkland

The Marquee Theater Company also performs at West Boca High School, but they have upcoming shows in Parkland, just south of the county line. From their press release:
Songs Cover Photo
“Songs for a New World” is the first musical from Tony Award winner Jason Robert Brown. This moving collection of powerful songs weaves together characters and history, examining life, love, and the choices we make; ultimately illuminating the timelessness of self-discovery. A powerful diverse cast and a supercharged, well-crafted score appeal to old and new generations alike as each character — in their own way — takes hold of that one moment that alters their path and brings them into “a New World”. Marquee plans on raising the bar and heightening the caliber of this contemporary song style by adding the element of Dance to tell each characters story.
“Songs for a New World” stars vocalists (alphabetically) Jordana Forrest, James Giordano, Leah Sessa, and Elijah Word. “Songs” also includes featured dancers (alphabetically) Taurean DeVou, Jonathan Eisele, Alissa Kane, Abi Perl, Ben Solmor, and Emily Tarallo. Directed and Choreographed by Co-Founder, Vice President, and Artistic Director Ben Solmor, and Musically Directed by Phil Hinton and Paul Reekie.
