The Florida Intergenerational Orchestra, the orchestra for everyone, begins its 10th Anniversary with an Open Rehearsal and Youth Scholarship Audition
The orchestra beginning its 10th Anniversary Season is holding open rehearsals for all musicians on Thursday, October 9th. Just bring your instruments and your love of music.
The Youth Scholarship auditions commences at 7:30 until 9 P.M. with the regular players also rehearsing 7:30-9:00 pm at Patch Reef Community Center, 2000 West Yamato Road, Boca Raton, Florida.
Every year brings a new level of excitement to the orchestra,” said Lorraine Marks-Field, founder and conductor of the orchestra. “Our holiday concert was a great success, the “Salute to America” with Vince Zabik singing “God Bless the USA” and “America” was beautiful, and the Hollywood themes were stirring. I can’t wait to have all our regular musicians back again and to see some new faces. Our youth scholarship program is designed to attract young players, ages 8 to 18 who are in love with music and their instruments, and who want to be part of a symphony orchestra that blends the generations.”

The Tenth Season’s first concert, a free holiday concert for the whole family sponsored by the MGN Family Foundation will be held at O’Shea Hall, Our Lady of Lourdes Church, 22094 Lyons Road, Boca Raton on Sunday, December 7th at 3:00 P.M.

The orchestra will celebrate the Holiday Season with music spanning the vast cultural tapestry that is South Florida.
The non-profit orchestra, featuring musicians ranging in age from 10 to 94, was honored by the State of Florida, Department of Elder Affairs. for its intergenerational concept. “We are grateful for the support the orchestra has received from its many benefactors. It is wonderful that this year the MGN Family Foundation provided the orchestra a grant allowing us to have a concert that is free for the entire family,” said Marks-Field. Seating is limited, and readers may want to call ahead to 561-482-8206 to reserve free seats.

New Homes on Golf Courses in West Boca?

boca-greens
Golf communities in West Boca are looking to add more homes. In January we wrote about the ongoing effort in Boca Del Mar to build on the defunct Mizner Trail golf course. Now there are two more in the works.
Boca Greens, on the west side of 441 between Glades and Yamato, is working with the county to try to add over sixty townhouses on roughly twenty acres of land currently used for their golf course and for other green space.

At the same time Boca Dunes (west side of Lyons, north of SW 18th) has a bigger plan to build nearly 250 townhouses on their golf course.
If all of these go through, in addition to the 237 units at the Sinai Residences on the Jewish Federation campus (south side of Glades at between 441 and Lyons) and 120 units in Akoya at Boca West, it would mean well over 1000 new homes in West Boca Raton.

There has been some public concern about all of this building, such as United Boca Del Mar against the Mizner Trail project, but the West Boca Community Council has so far been pretty quiet about it. Typical objections might relate to traffic, especially on Glades Road, Lyons Road the related intersections, and that most of these units might push down area home values.

At the same time the proposals could be viewed as a positive sign of health for the West Boca economy and a boost to local businesses.

5-Car Accident at Glades & Lyons

We happened to be nearby when we saw this tweet:

So we parked nearby and took a look. We saw several cars plus police and fire on the scene, mainly in the left turn lane of Glades, westbound at Lyons. There were also two trucks working on traffic lights on Lyons.
Here’s a panorama shot of the whole scene.

This shot is from the middle of Lyons just south of Glades (in the crosswalk), looking northeast.

The next two are from the sidewalk east of the accident and then further east.

From what we could see this was a fairly low speed incident and no one was hurt. There was substantial property damage and traffic delays but PBSO and Fire Rescue did a good job keeping things calm and smooth.
