New Walgreens Photos

West Boca photographer Johnnie Butters sent us these photos of the new Walgreens set to open soon in Shadowood Plaza on the north side of Glades just east of 441. Above is the front, facing Glades.
Next is the east side of the building, showing where the drive-thru lane will be:

And last is the west side of the building, showing the current Walgreens in the background:

Butters thinks it looks ready to open, but we don’t know any official open date yet. We’ll see if we can find out and keep our readers informed.

Pei Wei Coming to Glades & 441? Business Update

pei-wei-beracasa
We have several business stories to report. The biggest is Pei Wei. We’ve learned that the new construction in Westwinds of Boca (SE corner of Glades and 441) will include a Pei Wei Asian Diner. We have confirmed that there will be a total of five tenants in the new building, and that two of the other tenants will be a VisionWorks eyeglass store and a European Wax type place. All five tenants will be national chains, though we don’t yet know what the last two will be.
On the north side of Glades we’ve confirmed that Lime Fresh Mexican Grill will be coming to Shadowood, next to Sybarite Pig. Lime Fresh will be using the outdoor patio. We were wondering if the two would share the patio similar to how World of Beer in Promenade encourages other restaurants to deliver food, but apparently that’s not in the plans.
Also in Shadowood we noticed that the parking lot next to the new Walgreens has reopened. And we learned that a storefront near that will soon be filled with a Boca Nail Bar, expected to open early in 2015.
No word yet on the space used by the current Walgreens. As we understand it there are ongoing negotiations with potential tenants.
Further west a reader tipped us off that the China Cafe restaurant in Loggers Run (next to the post office) was not answering their phone. We stopped by today. There’s a sign on the door that says they closed temporarily on September 26th due to a personal emergency. The door was open and we were able to speak to the owner. He didn’t elaborate on the reason, but said he hopes to reopen in the next couple weeks.
Last, we visited the Shadowood Theater and experienced the new layout with reclining seats. It was very comfortable, and also a lot easier to get in and out of the rows.

12 of the 16 theaters are complete and the last four (to the left as you walk in) are currently blocked off.

For this last photo there was a language barrier so we decided to block out the faces since permission was unclear.

Deputies Chase Thief, Find Bees

pbso-palmetto-park-441
Readers contacted us about an incident on Palmetto Park Road just east of 441. A reader at the Walmart saw roughly seven Sheriff cars on the north side of Palmetto near Lowe’s and Walgreen’s.
After that the cars moved first into the parking area of those stores, and later even more PBSO vehicles were seen by other readers at the West Boca Medical Center emergency room.
We contacted PBSO information officer Teri Barbera. She’s not in the office but told us what little she knows at this time:
Deputies were chasing a suspect in a case involving theft. The chase led into an area with bees and deputies were stung. They are being treated at the medical center. Ms. Barbera did not know if the thief was caught when we spoke.
A reader updated us on what she saw:

I personally was there at the scene during almost the entire time. I was on the North side of Walgreens near the wooded area. The young guy who ran from Police to get away and hide stayed down in the murky area with water until the Canine finally arrived.
I only heard one Officer’s request to him to come out before the dog arrived as he would be bitten. All the Officers were standing watching the area where he went in. Nothing was said to try and get him out peacefully before the dog arrived on scene. Must have been 25 minutes before dog arrived. Since I was on the back side, I heard the dog go in and get the guy. I was heading out just after I heard the dog on the South side, making my way around and back to the scene. When I approached, the white guy was laying on the ground with no shirt and handcuffed behind his back. I did see blood on his arm.
Then I heard and noticed all the yelling and jumping…OMG…they were all being stung by bees! I felt so sorry for them all. I looked in my car for anything to help with the swarm of bees, but I had nothing to assist with. They quickly put the guy in the Police car and drove off. Many Officers were clearly visibly shaken with all the bees and stings. I felt so bad for them all.

We at West Boca News send our best wishes to the deputies and hope for their quick recovery.

Shadowood & Westwinds Construction Progress

We see a lot of progress in Shadowood Square and Westwinds of Boca, the two plazas on the east side of 441 at Glades Road. We’ve reported on these multiple times: Here and there for example.
In Shadowood, the shell of the future Walgreens is either done or nearly so. Workers were active on site this morning. Construction materials are piled up and ready to go.
On the south side of Glades in Westwinds of Boca (Home Depot & Publix), something big is coming.
Below is a panorama shot that stretches from the AT&T store of the far left to Boston Market on the far right. 441 is in the background of most of the picture. There’s a lot going on.

On the side closer to Glades we were able to get a better view. We think the big structures will underlay the parking but that’s a guess.

Projects Making Progress: Walmart, Walgreens and Westwinds

shadowood-walgreens
We’re seeing a lot of progress being made on projects going on in West Boca. For details on these and others see our previous post, What’s Going On At …?
Above you can see that they’ve started erecting the new Walgreens outbuilding in Shadowood. This photo was taken from the sidewalk on Glades Road, and the existing Walgreens is in the background at far left.

Across the street they’re doing a lot of work on the northwest corner of Westwinds of Boca (aka the Home Depot plaza) close to the Glades & 441 intersection. You can see some of the work in our cheesy 33-second video below.

Below is a panorama shot of the scene with Home Depot behind the camera and 441 in the background. In the distance the Glades/441 intersection is to the right and the entrance by the AT&T store and Chipotle is to the left.

Here’s another shot of that looking more towards the north and Shadowood:

And here’s our last shot, taken from over by the AT&T and Chipotle entrance, looking north. It appears they’re preserving some of the lake that was there before.

Finally they’re getting more done on the Walmart at Palmetto Park & 441. The door is on the front of the store close to Palmetto.

Here’s a panorama shot looking from the Palmetto entrance. We’ve tried other angles but it’s hard to get a good picture from any other spot.

And we also noticed they’re starting some kind of landscaping work. We saw this around the border of the property, outside the fence:
