Kosher Chinese in Loggers Run

Update: Marcus Kosher Chinese closed in roughly the summer of 2014.
We did get to Marcus’s Kosher Chinese for lunch today. It is in Loggers Run Plaza on Palmetto, roughly 2 miles west of 441, taking the place of the former Megumi Japanese restaurant. As you can see from the photo, it’s next to the Kumon Learning Center.

While small, Marcus’s has about the nicest interior we’ve seen in a Chinese restaurant in South Florida, on a par with Uncle Tai’s near Town Center. Not that it’s stunning, but most Chinese places are drab, focused on takeout with unattractive interiors.

Marcus offers a $8 lunch special with three courses (cash only), but we saw other things we wanted.
I started with the Hot & Sour soup. I liked it but it was not what I expected – sweet with a hint of vinegar. The scallions and mushrooms were fresh and overall the contents were good. I missed the pork that is typical in this dish, but one can see why that wouldn’t be included in a restaurant with the word Kosher in the name. Similarly you won’t find any shrimp or pork dishes on the menu.

My regular dining partner had the wonton soup. The broth tasted “a little more like Matzoh Ball Soup broth”, which she liked very much.
She also had the sesame chicken. This was particularly well prepared. The meat was very good quality, and it did not have too much breading.

For an entree I had the Szechuan Beef. Like my soup, it was a little sweeter than what I’m used to. But that wasn’t a bad thing. It was spicy (as the menu warned). I’d call it the right amount of heat, but it might be a little too hot for some. It had nice bits of green vegetables and some shredded carrot.

We ordered both of our dishes with brown rice, which was just fine.
Marcus is a pleasant fellow and we chatted with him a bit. The restaurant has been open for about 8 weeks. He’s originally from Ireland with a very long stop in London.
We wish Marcus well and expect to become semi-regular visitors.
