The Broadway production of Hairspray opened in 2002. It was based on the 1988 John Waters film. The musical is about a teenager, Tracy Turnblad, who dreams of dancing on The Corny Collins show and the features 1960s dance music and rhythm and blues. Tracy launches a campaign to integrate the show. The musical won 8 Tony Awards.
