Broward Bagel Bomb: Restaurant Inspections

A Broward bagel joint was closed last Saturday after inspectors found rodent droppings. The biggest number in our report is for a popular Asian restaurant in Central Boca. And a West Boca sandwich place had a perfect inspection. All that and more with 29 inspections from the past week, for paid subscribers:

Rob’s Bageland on Wiles in Coral Springs had the worst overall inspection this past week. Inspectors closed it after finding:

Rodent activity present as evidenced by rodent droppings found. -Observed 5 rodent droppings underneath food preparation table on front line next to rat trap. -Observed 1 rodent dropping in wait station next to ice machine.

There were 18 violations in total including 6 marked high priority by inspectors. Other troubling details: A dented can of “blueberry pie filling” (hint – the blueberry pie is not made with fresh berries), and temperature problems with sausages and beef gravy.

Sushi Ray in Boca Center had the biggest overall number with 21 violations, 6 of them high priority:

  • Dishmachine chlorine sanitizer not at proper minimum strength. Discontinue use of dishmachine for sanitizing and set up manual sanitization until dishmachine is repaired and sanitizing properly. At less than 50 ppm chlorine. Corrected to 100 ppm chlorine. **Corrected On-Site**
  • Food stored in ice used for drinks. a can of soda was stored in the ice machine. **Corrected On-Site**
  • Nonexempt fish offered raw or undercooked has not undergone proper parasite destruction. Fish must be fully cooked or discarded. Parasite destruction record provided for salmon does not show that farm raised salmon is pellet fed.
  • Potentially hazardous (time/temperature control for safety) food cold held at greater than 41 degrees Fahrenheit. At sushi bar cream Cheese 68f , seaweed 69f. And kale 69F. Held under no temperature control. Discarded. At prep table in cookline Raw chicken 52f, lettuce 47f, cooked broccoli 67f. Operator place chicken in cooler and the lettuce and broccoli in a ice bath. **Corrective Action Taken**
  • Potentially hazardous (time/temperature control for safety) food hot held at less than 135 degrees Fahrenheit or above. At sushi bar Eel was held at 105f. Discarded. **Corrective Action Taken**
  • Toxic substance/chemical stored by or with food. Detergent bottle stored over chest freezer in dry storage room near managers office. Chemical moved. **Corrected On-Site**

There were some middling numbers for a few restaurants in East Boca including Souvlaki Fast on Spanish River Blvd with 12 violations, House of Cheung and Hummus Factory both on NE 20th with 11 violations, and Renzo’s on Federal Highway, also with 11.

Nori on Palmetto Park Road had 9 violations, 6 of them high priority:

  • Dishmachine chlorine sanitizer not at proper minimum strength. Discontinue use of dishmachine for sanitizing and set up manual sanitization until dishmachine is repaired and sanitizing properly. 0 ppm chlorine
  • Employee touched soiled apron/clothes and then engaged in food preparation, handled clean equipment or utensils, or touched unwrapped single-service items without washing hands. Employee wiped hands in rear area of his pants and then handled food without washing hands first. Employee washed hands. **Corrected On-Site**
  • Operator unable to provide documentation that aquacultured fish has been raised in a controlled environment and fed formulated feed. No proof farm raised salmon is pellet fed.
  • Potentially hazardous (time/temperature control for safety) food cold held at greater than 41 degrees Fahrenheit. eggs 55F, bamboo shoots 52F, beef 52F, chicken 55F at cookline cooler. Iced down. **Corrective Action Taken**
  • Potentially hazardous (time/temperature control for safety) food identified in the written procedure as a food held using time as a public health control has no time marking . Sushi rice not time marked. Rice time marked. **Corrected On-Site**
  • Raw animal food stored over cooked food. Raw shrimp over cooked beef in freezer. Food moved. **Corrected On-Site**

Good News

Jon Smith Subs in Mission Bay Plaza wins the week with a perfect inspection – zero violations. On Federal Highway just south of Spanish River there were two perfect licensing inspections at Jimmy C’s Italian Deli and Whit’s Frozen Custard.

The restaurant at the Osprey Point golf course in South County Park had a near perfect licensing inspection with just one violation. We’re not sure if they’re open yet, but we did ask.

Miller’s Boca Ale House in Boca Lyons Plaza did well with three violations. Benihana in Westwinds and Panera in Boca Center had five violations each.

Further east two popular Italian restaurants on Palmetto, Louie Bossi and Trattoria Romana, had seven violations each.
