Restaurant Inspection Report for Early May
Three East Boca restaurants and one in West Boca had the worst numbers in this week’s inspection report. They include Magical Rice, Positano, Fran’s Chicken Haven and Giovanni’s Pizza.
Magical Rice on Federal Highway had the most “high priority” violations (6) out of a total of 14 violations. The worst of it related to food temperatures and storage, with one hand-washing violation.
- Potentially hazardous (time/temperature control for safety) food cold held at greater than 41 degrees Fahrenheit. Corn starch in water and fresh garlic in oil at 67-69f at the cookline, moved inside a cooler, explained time control procedure. **Corrective Action Taken**
- Potentially hazardous (time/temperature control for safety) hot held at less than 135 degrees Fahrenheit or above. Cooked egg at 115f on a prep table, moved inside a cooler. **Corrective Action Taken**
- Raw animal food stored over or with ready-to-eat food in walk-in freezer – not all products commercially packaged. Raw beef over crab sticks, raw beef moved to a lower shelf. **Corrected On-Site**
- Raw animal foods not properly separated from one another based upon minimum required cooking temperature in reach-in freezer – all products not commercially packaged. Wrapped Seafood and poultry all together on chest freezer.
- Single-use gloves not changed as needed after changing tasks or when damaged or soiled. Employee washing hands with gloves on, removed gloves and re washed hands. **Corrected On-Site**
- Wiping cloth sanitizer solution exceeds the maximum concentration allowed. Chlorine at greater than 200ppm, diluted to 100ppm **Corrected On-Site**
Fran’s Chicken Haven had the biggest total number with 20 violations, 3 of them high priority including food temperature issues. More disturbing to us was the minor violation for “Dead roaches on premises. 3 dead roaches under the 3 compartment sink, cleaned. **Corrected On-Site**”
Oddly it seems the place has not been inspected in over a year. We usually see inspections about twice a year.
Also in the top group was Positano, which had 17 violations including 4 marked high priority including food temperature and storage.
For West Boca we see a few places of note. The biggest number in the west was for Giovanni’s Pizza on Powerline, with 14 violation (4 high priority). Pizza slices for sale had no time markings, meatballs and sauce were kept between 70º and 75º instead of the required 135º, and there were food storage issues as well.
Just north of that Boca Kosher Bagel, on Powerline in the Boca Grove plaza, had 13 violations with 1 high priority.
Further west, Shinju Buffet (on Glades by the Turnpike) had 12 violations with 1 high priority. A couple years ago they had some bad inspections but they have improved and have been doing consistently better, though this is still not great.
Turning to the good news, Boca’s Best BBQ registered a perfect zero violations on a callback from their licensing inspection.
We mentioned previously that Rotelli’s is moving from Mission Bay to West Boca Square (near Hobby Lobby). That new location had a perfect licensing inspection, so we expect it will be open soon if it’s not already.
Madison’s New York Grill near Town Center had a perfect routine inspection, as did several facilities in the Boca Resort including the outstanding Morimoto.
Delray Beach is getting a new Indian restaurant named Saffron & Curry, on Atlantic near Congress. They had a licensing inspection with only one minor violation.
A few places in Town Center also had near-perfect routine inspections: Petrossian, 40 Carrots, Capital Grille and Macy’s Taste Bar. Nearby, Brewzzi and Abe & Louie’s also each had just one minor violation.
Grand Lux Cafe in Town Center had 2 minor violations.
Other notables include:
- Uncle Julio’s in Mizner Park had 7 violations with 4 marked high priority in a complaint inspection.
- Bru’s Room on Hillsboro near 441 had 8 violations, all minor.
- Ichiyami Buffet in Royal Palm Place had 11 violations with 4 high priority.
- Wayback Burgers on 441 in Coconut Creek had 13 violations, 2 high priority.
- Ruby Tuesday on Hillsboro in Deerfield Beach had 13 and 3.
