Construction Beginning: I-95 & Spanish River

FDOT is starting construction on the 13th on a big project. They will add an I-95 exit at Spanish River Blvd.
Details from FDOT are below with a diagram at bottom. We don’t understand the need for this. It’s very close to the Yamato exit. It looks like a tremendous amount of work (13 bridges between Yamato and Spanish River?) and so we wonder if it can be completed within the $67M budget.
While the project is in East Boca, it will affect many West Boca residents who drive that way.
This was proposed about a year ago and reaction was mostly positive. See this Sun Sentinel article from March 2012.
We could be wrong but we predict this will cause big traffic problems for the three years of construction, and won’t be much of an improvement when it’s done. We hope we are wrong.

I-95 Interchange at Spanish River Boulevard
Construction on this 2.5-mile project will begin Monday, January 13, 2014, in the City of Boca Raton. Work consists of constructing a new interchange at Spanish River Boulevard and I-95, widening Spanish River Boulevard west of FAU Boulevard, constructing 13 bridges between Spanish River Boulevard and Yamato Road, signalized intersection improvements and the addition of auxiliary lanes on Yamato Road, and sound wall construction along Yamato Road and on the east side of I-95 north of Yamato Road. The project costs an estimated $67 million. The work is being performed by Astaldi Construction and is expected to be completed fall 2016.
Construction Open House: On Wednesday, Jan. 15, from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m., a construction Open House will be held at the Marleen and Harold Forkas Alumni Center on the FAU Campus, 777 Glades Road, Building FA 94, Boca Raton, FL, 33431. Project staff will be on hand to review the project scope, and answer any questions. This meeting is open to the public.
