About Our Restaurant Reviews: A Spice Warning
A reader contacted us politely recently about one of our reviews:
On your posts recommendation we went to [Sybarite Pig]. We each ordered the burger with the egg and duck fat. … we waited close to an hour for our small burgers. To make matters worse my husband told our waiter that he could not eat anything spicy. The burgers came, were inedible (way too spicy) we ate nothing but a bite each and paid our bill of $32 dollars. My husband went back today to speak to the owner (who surprisingly was our waiter) explained the issue and his response??? They are way too busy to be concerned about us not liking our meal.
We reviewed Sybarite Pig back in September, but we’re not sure if that was what the reader was referring to as our recommendation. In our review we emphasized that it’s for foodies and beer connoisseurs, and we specifically mentioned that something was spicy. We also mentioned it in a Facebook post in April.
I had not yet tried the Wagyu Duck Fat Burger, but I did the other day. It was spectacular. It’s small and expensive, but I just love the flavor.
That gets to the point of this article. When reading my reviews, readers should be aware that I am not sensitive to spicy food at all. I did not think the Wagyu burger had any heat. However, my companion did think it was a bit spicy. For any reviewer you ultimately have to be careful about their particular taste.
As for service, we agree that Sybarite Pig is slow. It’s not a place we would recommend for a quick meal. The whole idea is to have an unusual beer while you’re waiting for your food, and then maybe another one with it.
keep me in mind for your DUI – 888-RED-LAWYER. 😉
In our experience the service has been very friendly, so we were surprised by that part of their comment. I’ve been there maybe 10 times myself and have friends who also like it.
By the way my companion in our most recent visit had the pulled pork sandwich, which was also good. The potato salad was not our favorite, but we both enjoyed the beet salad that is shown at the top with the burger.
We’re sorry that our reader had a bad experience, but we do appreciate the feedback. Our best guess is that Sybarite Pig is just not their kind of place.
