28 Violations? Mid-August Restaurant Inspections

The Pine Garden Chinese restaurant in East Boca heads up our latest restaurant inspection report with 28 total violations including eight marked as “high priority.” The worst of it was this one:

Rodent activity present as evidenced by rodent droppings found, 5 dry on top of electrical box next to circuit breaker. 1 dry on top of prep table under flour bin. 6 dry on shelf below prep table. 15 dry on plates in long term storage under prep table. 1 dry across from smoker in prep area.

There was also a “stop sale” due to “temperature abuse,” multiple hand-washing issues, and a dead roach found in a freezer.
That was on Friday. Inspectors returned the next day and they got it down to five total violations. There was still a problem with a refrigerator not maintaining proper temperatures and employee training issues. Back in May, Pine Garden had a total of 27 violations, though nothing requiring stop sales or follow-ups.
The good news is that’s the worst of our report. On the bright side, seven restaurants had perfect inspections including Moon’s Tavern and the Subway in Boca Greens, the Subway in Sandalfoot Square, the McDonald’s in Shadowood, and Cilluffo’s Pizza & Pasta and the Yogurt Emporium on SW 18th.

Shinju Buffet near the Turnpike also notched a perfect inspection, recovering well from a bad set of inspections earlier this year. Tempura House at 441 and Clint Moore also recovered with only two minor violations after a previous bad inspection.
The new Nikuya Sushi Thai Bistro in Loggers’ Run Plaza had 3 minor violations in their licensing inspection.
Going back to the poor results, Chili’s in West Boca Square had 14 total violations, though only one was rated “high priority” with melons kept a little too warm. Sandalfoot Bagel had 11 violations with two “high priority. Asia at the west end of El Camino Real had 15 violations with three serious ones. Sergio’s Bakery in Northwest Sandalfoot Plaza had 10 mostly minor violations.
The well-liked Uncle Tai’s in Boca Center (Military Trail) had surprising ten violations with four rated high priority, though we went through them and it looked like the inspector was picky. Last year they had a particularly bad inspection in November.
One of our favorites, Punjab (Indian) on Federal Highway did poorly with 15 violations including 3 rated high priority. Reviewing the details it looks like the inspector was overly picky. Deli on Rye, also on Federal Highway, had 17 violations including 6 rated serious including a stop sale due to temperature abuse, sewage backing up through floor drains, and food storage issues. A follow-up inspection will be required.
