Restaurant Inspection Report: July 2014
For the worst of July, see our report earlier on 8 restaurants shut down for roaches and rodents.
This is the rest of our report. The bright spots in West Boca were two restaurants in Mission Bay Plaza that had zero violations: That’s a Wrap and the new Gyro Room. Also perfect were: Brooklyn Boys Pizza in Shadowood; Lindburgers and Jimmy John’s in Westwinds of Boca; Jon’s Place and Einstein Bagel on Powerline; Lakeside Terrace (Glades near the Turnpike); and both Monet Cafe and Jersey Mike’s in the Garden Shops of Boca (Powerline and Palmetto Park). Congratulations to all of them!
Four others in Mission Bay had pretty good inspections: Tijuana Flats had two violations; Rotelli’s and First Watch each had three; and Jon Smith Subs had seven violations on a complaint inspection. None of them required any follow-up.
In the 33428 zip code (west of Lyons and south of Glades), Casa do Pao in Northwest Sandalfoot Plaza. They did okay with 5 violations, and no follow-up required.
Three West Boca restaurants tied for worst with 15 violations: Boca Kosher Bagel in Boca Grove, Dominic’s I (near Party City), and Shanghai City Chinese near Lakeside Terrace (Glades at the Turnpike). Dominic’s II in Westwinds of Boca (Publix & Home Depot plaza) had 12 violations. Taso’s Greek and Chipotle in the same plaza had five violations each, and Jersey Mike’s only had two.
Our favorite Chinese place, Bamboo Wok, had 11 mostly minor violations as well. That won’t stop us from getting take-out. Sushi Yama Japanese also had 11 violations. Oba Brazilian on SW 18th (near Carrabba’s) had 10 violations. They also had 10 violations in our February inspection report.
One of our favorite Italian places, Stallone’s, had 9 violations including 4 marked as “high priority” but no follow-up was required. The concerns were mostly related to food temperatures and they were not far off the required levels. Corrective measures were taken. Butcher Block Grill at the western end of Camino Real also had 9 violations on a complaint inspection.
Hashi Sushi Thai in Shadowood had 8 violations. With all the construction going on we’re not sure anyone can get in there anyway.
In Somerset Shoppes, Efe’s Bistro and Saito’s Japanese Steakhouse each had 6 violations. Pei Wei Asian Diner on Beracasa Way also had 6 violations.
Anthony’s Coal Fired Pizza in Boca Grove had a respectable four violations, as did La Granja by Town Center.
In Boca Lyons Plaza (southwest corner of Glades & Lyons), Utopia Bagels had 5 violations. Yokohama Sushi and Steve’s Wood Fired Pizza each had 3 violations, all minor.
For the rest of our report there are some highlights and lowlights. Starting at the bottom, Japango in Parkland’s Riverstone Shoppes (on 441 just south of Loxahatchee Road) had 23 violations, though no follow-up was required. ABC Chinese Restaurant on Hillsboro in Deerfield Beach had 24 violations and was issued a warning.
In East Boca, Red’s Backwoods BBQ and Yakitori Sake House each had 14 violations. Yakitori also received a warning and a stop-sale. Looking at the report this seems a bit excessive as it relates to tofu not being kept cold enough at the soup station.
Cannoli Kitchen on Federal Highway had 10 violations and a warning.
On the bright side Flashback Diner and Chop’s Lobster Bar in East Boca both had perfect inspections.
