Rodents & Roaches at East Boca Sushi-Thai

A Sushi/Thai restaurant in East Boca was closed for two days by inspectors after they found both roach and rodent activity. Full details are below for subscribers.

On the good news side of things, two popular Asian restaurants in West Boca had near perfect inspections. And the high-end Six Tables near Mizner Park had a perfect inspection.

Ichiban Sushi and Thai on Federal Highway was closed for two days. This image from last year shows it under its previous name.

Ichiban Sushi and Thai was hit with an emergency order after a restaurant inspection found both roach and rodent activity. The total was only 17 violations with 4 high priority, but two of those were doozies. There was also a stop sale on rice but

  • Roach activity present as evidenced by live roaches found. 1 live roach on floor to the left of dish machine.
  • Rodent activity present as evidenced by rodent droppings found. 7 fresh rodent droppings under reach in cooler across grill. 4 fresh rodent droppings on the floor under rice cooker in kitchen. 7+ fresh rodent droppings under dishmachine.
  • Potentially hazardous (time/temperature control for safety) Rice 72°F identified in the written procedure as a food held using time as a public health control has no time marking and the time removed from temperature control cannot be determined. Cook stated rice was placed in sushi station at 10am. Rice has been out of temperature for more than 4 hours.See stop sale.
  • Dishmachine chlorine sanitizer not at proper minimum strength. Discontinue use of dishmachine for sanitizing and set up manual sanitization until dishmachine is repaired and sanitizing properly 0 ppm. **Repeat Violation**

Inspectors came back the next day and still found “1 live roach on gasket of reach in cooler across cook line. 3 live roaches on the floor under reach in cooler across cook line.” On the third day there were no violations and they reopened.

The next two biggest numbers in this report were for Rafina in the Boca Pointe plaza at SW 18th and Powerline (15 violations, 2 high priority – handwashing and food storage) and the Sandalfoot Bagel place (15, 3 – handwashing, food storage and vacuum breaker).

Good News

The winner in this week’s report is Six Tables, which had a perfect inspection with no violations. This is a truly high-end dining experience. We ate there once for a special occasion. Very expensive but worth it.

Not far behind were Benihana and Bamboo Wok with just two minor violations each. Benihana is a new hibachi table hot spot, though we personally prefer their happy hour menu. Bamboo Wok is a mostly take-out Chinese place on Glades near Lyons, and did well in our 2014 poll.

Also doing well were the new BurgerFi at Boca Pointe with 4 violations and both Pollo Tropical (near Lowes) and Abe & Louie’s (Glades near Town Center) with 5 each.

Other Notables

Other restaurants of particular interest to our readers in this report include

  • Miller’s Ale House in Boca Lyons Plaza (6 violations)
  • Carrabba’s in Boca Pointe (7)
  • Juice & Java on St. Andrews (8)
  • Davinci’s in Town Center (8)
  • Padrino’s in Mission Bay (9)
  • Orchid’s Garden Chinese at Boca Fontana (11)
  • Smokey Bones on 441 (12)
