Boca Tea Party June 2012

A bit less than 100 showed up for a Palm Beach County Tea Party event at Boca Greens tonight. The event included a nice buffet dinner.

In the audience were two GOP candidates headed for a primary for State Senate, for the new 25th district. The two are Geoff Sommers and Melanie Peterson. Both are impressive. Their primary will be on August 14th, and we hope to do at least a couple stories on them. I was pleased to see Sommers carrying a copy of The Road to Serfdom.
During dinner there was a presentation by “Tice” about socialism and Marxism in US politics, connecting that history to the current occupant of the White House. I heard members of the audience expressing disapproval of this approach – “it’s not about his past. It’s about what he’s done as President.”
Local chair Alex Berry spoke about the county organization and its focus on fiscal responsibility, limited government and free markets. He also spoke humorously about how upside down our world.
Slade O’Brien was the main speaker. He is Florida State Director for Americans for Prosperity, and a resident of Boca Raton. Before he spoke he handed out cards titled “It’s the Spending, Stupid!”
AFP is focused on fiscal and economic issues and not on social issues.
“Compromise got us $15 Trillion in debt. We don’t need to compromise. We need to win.”
O’Brien spoke about the general election and the challenge of beating Barack Obama. Obama is well liked among independents, but they do not like his policies.
Judicial elections are also coming up, and no Florida judge has ever lost a “merit retention” election. Three judges on the state Supreme Court are up and AFP is working on educating voters on these elections. Three new faces on the court would be a major change.
The Florida legislature is not doing enough to support Gov. Scott’s efforts to bring jobs to Florida, even though both houses are majority Republican.
O’Brien also criticized corporate tax credits that favor cronies and out of state businesses that move here over businesses that are already here. He also spoke about public employee pensions, calling to end defined benefit plans for new government hires. He does not favor altering pensions for existing employees.
Other topics included eliminating state corporate tax (only 2% of state budget); improving school choice education options for families; transparency in local government regulations and permitting; transparency in state contracts, which are a large component of state spending; and removing more state regulations and licensing.
Specific areas where the legislature failed to support Gov. Scott on cutting corporate taxes and eliminating cronyism, among other issues.
Another candidate, James Ryan O’Hara, mentioned that he is having a fundraiser on June 23rd.

Hashi Sushi Thai in Shadowood

We have lunch at Hashi Sushi Thai about once a month. It is in Shadowood Plaza on the northeast corner of 441 and Glades.
My sashimi was generally good but not great. The wasabi had no kick and the ginger didn’t taste right. The fish was good and that’s the most important thing. Also more variety of fish than some other places.

My regular companion had the sweet and sour chicken. She liked it. I tasted a bit and liked it as well. The chicken was tender and it includes a nice selection of veggies, including onion, pepper, tomato plus pineapple chunks.

We also had a vegetarian guest with us today. She had the tofu with mixed vegetables and spoke well of it.

We all had miso soup, and we also had an edamame appetizer. One minor note – our server was not the best. We did not get water when we first asked for it and we were given only two sets of utensils.
Total with drinks and tip was $47.

Euro Fusion at Wharfside Village

Update: Euro Fusion has closed and there is now a Greek restaurant in its place, Rafina.
Euro Fusion is a fairly new restaurant in the plaza better known for the Carrabba’s. it’s on 18th at Powerline in South Central Boca.
We sat outside on the deck, with a beautiful lake view (Carrabba’s deck has the same).

It’s an interesting menu. They seem very serious about being Kosher. I saw no red meat or chicken, probably because they serve milk. They even have kosher shrimp.
The large menu includes breakfast, lunch, dinner (with kids menu), sushi and dessert.
I started with seared yellowtail, a sashimi-like dish but slightly cooked, and with jalapeño slices. The presentation was attractive and the jalapeño provided a nice burn.

Next we had a Mediterranean appetizer, with hummus, baba ghanouj, and two other items. All excellent, and I usually don’t like baba ghanouj.

We also had their “European” salad, with candied walnuts, avocado and orange slices. Three of us shared two of these and all were impressed with the dressing which was delicious but not overpowering.

All in all a very nice meal. We will be back.

Election Deadline June 8th for REC, DEC

Every four years Florida has “elections” for local party positions in Republican and Democratic parties. This appears to be a well-kept secret, as without elections the party establishment fills these seats with its own choices.
The deadline for filing is June 8, 2012. I confirmed the following instructions, generally, with the Palm Beach elections office. The blog post is aimed at Tea Party Republicans, but much of it applies to other Republicans and to Democrats as well.
Filing Process for Republican Executive Committee
I had previously heard that one cannot file before June 4th, but I did not hear that today.
The short version:
File this form with your county Supervisor of Elections: Candidate Oath (pdf)
File party loyalty oath with the party: Party Oath
Both must be “witnessed” (most banks have notaries) and both must be submitted by June 8th.
Comments and suggestions appreciated.
West Boca Raton is in Palm Beach County. For the county parties:
