West Boca High Grad for State Rep: Joshua Izaak

izaak-biden
Okay, so we’re not exactly Joe Biden fans. But Joshua Izaak is a fan, and that’s probably not a bad thing in a Democratic primary race. Izaak is running for State Representative in District 81, which runs west of the Turnpike from the county line up to Wellington. West Boca has a big chunk of the voters, possibly a majority within the district.
We met Mr. Izaak in Mission Bay Plaza, as you can see below.

Sometimes we get criticized for doing too many negative stories, or mentioning the arrestee’s high school in the headline of a crime story. This is one of those moments we get to do the reverse – a positive story about a local kid.
Mr. Izaak attended Water’s Edge Elementary and Loggers’ Run Middle Schools. He spent a year at Olympic Heights and then West Boca High opened near his home in Boca Falls. His academic accomplishments go up from there, graduating from Emory University and recently from law school at the University of Florida. He’s now 25 years old.
His Democratic political resume includes internships with Ted Deutch who was a State Senator at the time, and with Congressman Robert Wexler. If you read the About page on his website, it’s pretty clear that he doesn’t just sip the liberal Democrat Kool-Aid. He chugs it.

During Joshua’s second summer in law school, he worked at the Democratic National Committee in the Voter Protection Department. Joshua worked to combat Republican attempts to restrict access to the vote through discriminatory laws aimed at reducing voter turnout. Joshua also worked to find solutions in response to the conservative Supreme Court’s decision to strike down portions of the 1965 Voting Rights Act.

Ideologically he’s not my guy. But he’s running in a primary against a Democratic incumbent with no Republican in the race, so it’s not about ideology or party.
During our conversation he was particularly motivated about education. He’s passionate about schools based on his own experience in the ones our kids go to. And contrary to what we expect from his liberal Democrat credentials, he’s strongly against Common Core and high-stakes testing. He wants to decouple school funding from test results.
I challenged him on that from a political standpoint. As we recently reported, West Boca schools do well in such testing. So our schools benefit from the link between testing and funding. Izaak stuck to his guns. The problem, as he sees it, is that schools teach to the tests instead of just teaching so even the kids in the “winning” schools suffer.
Speaking of guns, Izaak criticized Kevin Rader for voting to expand the Stand Your Ground law to protect warning shots. We will be meeting with Rader on Monday and will ask him about that. Izaak is thus positioning himself to the left of Rader on “gun control.” That’s not something that persuades me but might be effective in a Democratic primary.
The two other big distinctions Izaak draws between himself and Rader deal with special interests and access. He feels Rader is affected by special interests, especially in his own industry. Rader works in insurance and Izaak criticized him for an amendment that would shift the burden of dry wall replacement from condo associations to individual condo owners. That might not seem important until you realize how many votes are in Century Village and similar housing in our district.
After the interview I asked Izaak to provide a link or other support about this amendment. He sent me this YouTube video which shows Rader on the floor of the House presenting an unimpressive defense of his amendment.

As for access, Izaak said that Rader is not sufficiently responsive to voters in the district. We’re not sure how to measure that but we’ll ask Rader about it anyway. He certainly responded quickly to our request for an interview.
Despite some disagreements, I was impressed with Izaak. He’s smart, well-educated, passionate, and energetic. He’s the kind of success story we’re happy to see coming out of our local schools and we hope to see more like him.
We should note that although it’s a Democratic primary, Republicans can vote in it because there’s no Republican candidate in the race. The primary election is on August 26th.
Update: We just found a video of Izaak speaking about his campaign.

Disclosure: We also live in Boca Falls, though in a different subdivision and we’ve never met or even heard of Izaak or his family before. We also live around the corner from Ted Deutch and we have met him and his wife, but only briefly.

Olympic Heights Gets Coach Berger

Ray Berger after his Spanish River team won.
Ray Berger after his Spanish River team won.

Olympic Heights High School has a new football coach in Ray Berger. Berger was kind enough to speak with us on the phone today.
He’s been involved in football for many years, including coaching at Spanish River for a few years and several years at Santaluces in Lantana. Most recently he’s been working with disabled kids at Spanish River as their “Crisis Intervention” teacher. In the past he’s coached several successful athletes including Vince Wilfork at Santaluces, now a star defensive tackle for the New England Patriots.
bergerThe main thing we picked up from Coach Berger is fun: He used the word a lot. “Every kid would want to play for me. It’s all about fun.”
He feels high school coaches here don’t face the same pressures we see at the college level. “No one takes care of the kids like I take care of them. I don’t treat them like a piece of meat. I want them to have fun.”
His short term goals are to get ready for practice, which starts Monday, and get kids back out to football.
We asked about what kind of systems he expects to run, such as a 3-4 vs. a 4-3 on defense. His answer was simple: “Run an offense fitting the talents we have. I coach to what I have.” He said the same about defense.
He’s made some progress on assistant coaches. He wasn’t ready to release the entire staff but his offensive coordinator will be Andrew Immler, who played for Berger at Spanish River.

He’s 21 years old and is finishing up at FAU. Berger says there’s a trend in athletics of working young assistant coaches. Miami Heat coach Erik Spoelstra is probably the best example of that we can think of. Immler was also a West Boca Dragons head coach and board member.
Dick Hopkins will be defensive coordinator. He was the defensive backs coach for FAU under Howard Schnellenberger.

John Hartman: School Board Candidate

johnhartman
We had lunch yesterday with John Hartman at It’s All Greek on Clint Moore near 441. He is one of three candidates for Palm Beach County School Board. District 3 runs mostly north of Clint Moore and west of Military Trail. We previously interviewed candidate Dave Mech, and hope to meet with incumbent Karen Brill as well.
A teacher, Hartman sees a number of things wrong with the current school system and he demonstrated a clear understanding of it from the inside. He presents an interesting contrast to Mech, who seems motivated more by his pending lawsuit against the school district and less aware of practical concerns we’ve heard from many parents.

See Hartman’s campaign website.

Hartman is particularly focused on Common Core, corruption in the school district, and charter school abuses. He recognizes that the Somerset Academy charter school near the Canyon developments is popular and does well, but feels the current charter system fails on accountability. We’re not sure the regular public schools are much better on that, but he is persuasive.
The real race seems to be between Hartman and incumbent Karen Brill. He notes two key distinctions. First, Hartman is an educator, while Brill is a real estate agent. He feels that having a background in education makes him more qualified to serve on the school board. We aren’t sure about that but he certainly seems qualified.
Second, Hartman is opposed to Common Core. He describes Brill as leading the charge for it and points to her involvement in the “Greater Florida Consortium of School Boards” as evidence of that. We hope to ask Brill to clarify, but the evidence is compelling:

The full pdf of that document is at bottom.
We would also note a third distinction – Hartman is clearly a political outsider. You can read more about Brill on her website, but it appears she is well-connected within the establishment.
On the politics, this looks like a big climb for Hartman. While he does have a strong message, he doesn’t seem to have a clear plan for communicating that message to voters. We hope to meet with Brill next.

West Boca Schools Get Straight A's

School grades are out for elementary and middle schools around the state. West Boca schools did well.
Among middle schools, all Boca Raton public schools got A grades. Eagles Landing had the highest score among the West Boca schools with a 667. Scores for both middle and elementary schools are based on FCAT scores.
Eagles-Landing-Middle
Omni Middle and Loggers’ Run were just behind with 659 and 658 respectively. Boca Middle School in East Boca did worse with a 603, but still maintained an A grade. Don Estridge, a magnet school in East Boca, did better with a 714. Bak Middle, another magnet program in West Palm Beach, did the best with a 788. Somerset Academy Boca Middle School, a small charter in East Boca, also managed an A grade but with a score of 577, which is lower than the top B schools.

Del Prado and Water’s Edge led all West Boca elementary schools with scores of 645 and 643. Sandpiper Shores (630) and Sunrise Park (620) were not far behind. Calusa Elementary (607), Verde Elementary (601), Coral Sunset (575) were in the middle of the pack. Hammock Pointe and Whispering Pines both maintained A grades with matching scores of 548.
Addison Mizner had the highest score in East Boca with 616, followed by JC Mitchell (581) and Boca Raton Charter (527 – still an A). The Somerset Academy’s charter elementary school had a B grade with a score of 498. Boca Raton Elementary trailed with a C grade and a 459.
We should also mention Morikami Park, which is a magnet elementary IB program in Delray Beach that has many West Boca students. They were second best in the county with a score of 711, just behind Binks Forest (720) in Wellington.

West Boca High's JaWand Blue Charged with Sexual Battery

JaWand Blue
We’re sure the haters will come out against us on this one, but it’s in the Palm Beach Post, Miami Herald and even the Washington Post.
Former West Boca High star JaWand Blue and another player were arrested, charged with sexual battery, and dismissed from the University of Miami football team. The two allegedly admitted to police that they drugged and raped a 17-year-old girl.
We should note at this point that admissions to police can be unreliable and both men are innocent until proven guilty.
According to police report, the two men brought a female student to a dorm room and “administered or had knowledge of someone administering” to the accuser some kind of substance (alcohol or drugs) before having oral, vaginal and anal sex with her.
Police claim: “The victim was physically helpless to resist,” and further that the two men admitted buying her several alcoholic beverages, bringing her back to one of their rooms, and performing sexual acts with her. It’s not completely clear if the men admitted there was a lack of consent.
The arrests happened less than 24 hours ago and the Miami-Dade online court database does not show further information at this writing.
