Sheriff's Press Conference About Sandalfoot Body

Update, June 11, 2015:

On Sunday, June 8, 2014, shortly after 10:00pm, Susan Roberts drove away from St. Mary’s Medical Center, where she was employed in the pharmacy. Roberts was driving her beige 2009 Lexus GX350 sport utility vehicle en route to her home in unincorporated Boca Raton
On Monday, June 9, 2014, at 3:47pm, Roberts was discovered deceased inside her vehicle in the Watergate Mobile Home Park on Sandalfoot Boulevard, also in unincorporated Boca Raton. It is believed that Roberts may have been in unincorporated Boca Raton when the crime occurred.

The Palm Beach Sheriff held a press conference today (Monday) along with family members. They apparently hope that reaching out to the public in this way might help generate leads.
We previously reported that a body had been found in a Lexus SUV in the Sandalfoot trailer, and that she had been identified as Susan Roberts, residing in Lexington Estates with Terri Hemings.

At the press conference the family offered a $1000 reward for clues to help find her killer. Some reports refer to Hemings as her husband, though we have not been able to verify the marriage.

We have requested more information from PBSO and will update if we learn more.

US-441 Improvements Coming?

The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) is working on plans to improve US-441 (State Road 7). They’re looking specifically at the stretch from Glades Road in West Boca down to Sample Road in Broward County. FDOT is making a presentation to the Palm Beach County Metropolitan Planning Organization on Thursday at 9 am, which is considering whether to endorse the plan:

The plan recommends (in bureaucratic language of course):

Context Sensitive Alternative with multimodal solutions
– Bicycle and pedestrian facilities
– Transit stop infrastructure and access improvements
– Intersection improvements to improve traffic flow
Transportation systems management and operations (TSM&O) initiatives
– Traffic signal system operations
– Traveler information and incident management
– Transit service and operations

A lot of the discussion deals with “transit” which is another word for buses. Palm Tran and BCT (Broward County Transit) are mentioned by name in the document we reviewed.

The biggest change we see in pictures like the one above are the “Premium Bus Stop.” While much of the focus is on transit, there are some minor intersection improvements in the conversation, and most are in West Boca. This may be a smaller part of the document but it looks like a much bigger chunk of money.

The plans would add or expand turn lanes at Marina (SW 18th), Sandalfoot, Judge Winikoff, Palmetto Park, Boca Woods, and Glades Road. Some of these make little sense to us. For example, the plan says to “add a westbound right-turn lane” at Palmetto Park Road. There is already a long right-turn lane there and we’ve never seen it back up.

The proposal to add a “westbound left-turn lane” at Boca Woods Lane makes even less sense. Boca Woods Lane, by that name, sits entirely west of 441. The east side, where a westbound left-turn lane would be, is named N Central Park Blvd. That’s the loop that serves West Boca Medical Center. It already has a left-turn lane.

Adding a westbound turn lane at Sandalfoot would probably require a bridge upgrade, which we mentioned before is in the works.
The most important change mentioned is increasing storage capacity for the southbound left-turn lanes on 441 at Glades. These back up quite a bit, though we don’t see a lot of room for that because of the northbound left turn lane into Mission Bay Plaza.

Other plans include:

Traffic Signal System Operation
• Signal coordination through jurisdictional boundaries n Adaptive signal timing
• Peak period arterial progression
• Dynamic signal timing
Information and Incident Management
• Incident and emergency management
•Traveler information systems
Transit
• Transit information system
• Transit signal priority/Queue jump

Most of it again sounds like efforts to improve busing, such as signs to provide updates on transit information (such as how far away the next bus is). Others may not appreciate giving buses priority on traffic signals.
For the next five years transit improvements will be limited to traffic signals and signs for bus status updates. There’s also talk of creating a hub at West Boca Medical Center to connect Palm Tran and BCT, as well as upgrading bus stops.
If all goes ahead as planned the intersection improvements would start about five years from now.

Body Identified: Susan Roberts of Lexington Estates

The Sheriff has identified the body found in a Lexus in the Sandalfoot trailers. Susan S. Roberts, age 56, was named as the deceased.
Through researching public records we believe that Ms. Roberts resided at a property on Holcomb Place in Lexington Estates.

That property is owned by a couple who live in the Chicago area. It appears Ms. Roberts was a tenant of theirs and records also indicate there was one other tenant. The Sun-Sentinel reports that they spoke with co-tenant Terri Hemings who did not tell them much about what happened.
Broward County records show that Roberts and Hemings were defendants in a foreclosure action in 2009, possibly on a property in Coral Springs. Roberts also had a speeding ticket earlier this year in Palm Beach County, but otherwise had a completely clean record.
West Boca News has reached out to a couple of connections we see to Ms. Roberts and we hope to find out more information.
We also think Ms. Roberts may have an adult son living in Boca Raton. Of course if our readers can provide any more information, please let us know. We would be happy to do an obituary as well.

YouFit Coming to Sandalfoot

A few readers have asked us about a possible YouFit gym opening in the Sandalfoot Square shopping plaza. We contacted YouFit and they responded. Yes they’re coming, but no they don’t know when yet.

Thank you for inquiring about Youfit Health Clubs! Youfit has recently secured the space for their new West Boca location located on 441 in the Sandalfoot Plaza, next to the Western Beef (The sign is currently above the location).
Unfortunately at the moment we do not have any information on timelines for pre-sale or a grand opening. In the future we will definitely have more information on when the location will be scheduled to open. You can check our website at www.youfit.com under the “Clubs” tab to see our locations coming soon, or call us at 561.338.0600 for more information.

5 Drug Cases for Arrest Week

west-boca-drugs
We fell a bit behind in our arrest reports so we’re catching up.
Please remember that all arrestees are innocent until proven guilty, and also that the crime rate in West Boca is actually low.
Allen Massarella (far left, 24) was arrested early Saturday morning by Boca PD for possession of marijuana and drug equipment. His reported address is near Clint Moore and Military Trail and he’s worked at some West Boca restaurants. He just might be a fan of classic cars.
Mr. Massarella is fresh off a smaller marijuana case in March, and he appears to have had two previous marijuana cases in the county that were both dropped.
Simon King (far right, 28) was booked early on Monday the 12th by PBSO deputies accused of selling heroin. Apparently that’s illegal now.
Mr. King’s reported address is in the San Marco at Broken Sound community and he appears to work as a bartender in an area country club. Our research suggests he is a native of Ireland. We see no previous cases for him.
David Martinez (2nd from left, 23) was booked Tuesday morning for possession of drugs and drug equipment. He has no reported address but rather is listed as homeless with the zip code 33428. Unlike the first two, he remains in custody on $2000 bond.
Martinez had a felony robbery arrest and conviction in 2008, and an indecent exposure charge in 2013. Our research indicates he’s a Spanish River grad, which we’re sure will prompt a lively response from that crowd.
Katherine Knill (center, 34) was arrested Tuesday on one count of drug possession and several counts of possessing drug equipment, and released the same day. Her reported address is off Markham Way near the far western end of Sandalfoot.
Ms. Knill was arrested in 2012 and adjudicated guilty of forgery and possession of paraphernalia.
Matthew MacCubbin (18, center-right), with the same reported address as Ms. Knill, was arrested at about the same time and accused of possessing a small amount of marijuana and drug equipment. He was also released the same day.
MacCubbin, a senior at West Boca High with no prior history, may have had some issues living at home shortly before this arrest:
