Local cancer patient Randi Heller is having a fundraiser at The Meatball Room on May 27th at 6 pm, a wine tasting event supporting her “road to recovery.” Heller was diagnosed at age 30 in July of 2013 with Acute Myeloid Leukemia. For the next 6 months she underwent five rounds of chemotherapy and five hospital stays lasting from 2-4 weeks each. In February of this year she went through a bone marrow / stem cell transplant procedure from an unrelated donor. She relapsed this month and is currently in the hospital getting more chemotherapy and treatments. Heller tells us:
My medical expenses are not fully covered. This includes deductibles, co-payments, prescriptions, doctor visits and hospital stays. The medical bills are insane.

We noticed two new businesses and a remodeling recently here in West Boca. First up, there is a new haircut place in West Boca Square (the Target plaza on 441), Hair on Fire.
I went to the another location once during an East Boca haircut adventure. It’s … interesting. And the haircut was fine and reasonably priced. In the same plaza the Burger King is being remodeled.
We reported yesterday that Brooklyn Water Bagel is open in West Boca with photos of the exterior and interior. We had a lot of positive feedback from readers. Today we went back for lunch. The short story: We liked it. My wife (and co-founder of West Boca News) is from Long Island. She’s picky about bagels. Brooklyn Water Bagels won her over. Their bagels taste good and have the right texture and hardness on the outside. She had the cheese omelette along with a plain bagel and butter. Nothing fancy, but plain is the best test of bagel quality. I had “The Manhattan” sandwich with nova salmon, cream cheese and tomato and red onion, and I had it on an everything bagel. Above you can see a pretty good closeup on the bagel. Here’s a close-up on the sandwich: I would have liked it with more salmon and a little less cream cheese, but it was still good and for $8.49 it was reasonably priced. One other interesting feature is the “coffee bar”. If you order a coffee there are several flavors and creams you can add to it. The NFL and the sports media complex have been effusively bragging about how Michael Sam being drafted by the Rams shows the NFL has become inclusive and respectful of homosexuals. It’s a lie. It’s great that he accepted into the team, but will this affect how many people pick him for their fantasy teams? For more fantasy football news and analysis visit FanDuel.com. Sam was the defensive player of the year in the Southeastern Conference. Those who follow football know that the SEC is the strongest conference in college football. So being named their best defensive player is a huge accomplishment. Here’s a key statistic about that honor: Since 2006, every SEC defensive player of the year was drafted in the first round. Here are the picks going back to 2004: 2012: Jarvis Jones was drafted 17th overall in the first round 2011: Morris Claiborne – 6th pick, 1st round 2010: Patrick Peterson – 5th pick, 1st round 2009: Rolando McClain – 8th pick, 1st round 2008: Eric Berry – 5th pick, 1st round 2007: Glenn Dorsey – 5th pick, 1st round 2006: Patrick Willis – 11th pick, 1st round 2005: Demeco Ryans – 33rd pick, 2nd round 2004: David Pollack – 17th pick, 1st round Ryans just missed the first round, going as the first pick of the 2nd round. Altogether the previous nine were picked, on average, on the 12th overall pick. 2013: Michael Sam – 249th pick, 7th round Michael Sam was drafted 249th? I’ve seen various explanations why Sam was projected as a mid-round pick dealing with his size, speed, etc. They’re all nonsense. The simple fact is that he had a great year in 2013 – much better than #1 pick Jadeveon Clowney had at the same position – against the best offensive lines in college football. The guys he beat to get his sacks will be the same guys trying to block him in the NFL. Sports Illustrated reported after his “I’m gay” announcement that several NFL executives and coaches “project a significant drop in Sam’s draft stock.” So let’s stop the puffery that Sam being drafted shows the NFL has become inclusive. His fall to the 7th round shows instead that the NFL remains horrendously bigoted against homosexuals. At worst he should have gone in the 2nd. And let’s keep in mind that the NFL seems to have little problem drafting players with criminal records. Michael Sam has never been arrested for anything. In the NFL criminals are favored over homosexuals. West Boca News is placing its bet right now. Michael Sam will make the team and have a long and successful NFL career. The Spring Concert for West Boca High School’s award winning Vanguard Band will take place Thursday May 15th, 7 PM in the school theater (Glades Road west of South County Regional Park). All are invited to hear the only high school band program in Palm Beach County to send two bands to the Florida Bandmasters Association State Band Assessment this year! For this year’s Spring Concert, the bands of West Boca will be joined on stage by students from the Loggers’ Run Middle School Band program for a special performance of a medley of songs from the Disney film Frozen. Admission is $5.00 for adults and $3.00 for children at the door. Come out and support our local band students!
