Saturday: Tai Chi in the Park

Tomorrow dozens of Tai Chi and Qigong (pronounced chee – gung) practitioners from West Boca and beyond will participate in our little corner of a worldwide event: World Tai Chi & Qi Gong Day. Below is a photo from last year’s group:

People will begin gathering around 9:30 am just north of Sunset Cove Amphitheater in South County Regional Park. There will be a barbecue with some food provided to participants.

Steven's Pizzeria

Alert: Steven’s closed and is now Lenny’s Kosher Pizza.

The pizza place in West Boca Square (the plaza with Target) has changed owners and names again. It used to be Venenzia. In 2012 it became Frankie’s Pizza & Pasta. And now it’s Steven’s Pizzeria, though the sign on the front still uses the “Pizza & Pasta” from before. We got a set of coupons for their “Grand Opening” so we gave it a try.
The interior has not changed much from before.

If you go back and look at the exterior and interior photos from our Frankie’s Pizza & Pasta article, you can see it’s almost identical.
The negative part of the meal was the timing. We ordered a salad (which comes with garlic rolls), a pizza and a side of baked ziti. Normally we’d expect the salad and rolls to come out first, and then the pizza and ziti at least a few minutes later. Instead they all came out at the same time, except for the rolls which came out later. It wasn’t a huge problem.
Also, there were long gaps where we did not see our server. As you can see from the interior photos it was not crowded.
But let’s get to the good part – the food. The Caesar salad was very good, though perhaps not traditional. The dressing was excellent. Our normally picky small child actually ate some and liked it.

The pizza was also delicious. We got a large with half cheese (for the kids) and half “house special” for carnivore daddy. It was cooked just right and we all enjoyed it.

The baked ziti was also good. The sauce was a touch sweet, which worked for us but others might not like that.

While the food is good, be prepared for a quirky experience. When we were done with the meal we wanted to order desserts. They have some interesting items on the menu, such as a chocolate coulant. Unfortunately most of the desserts were not available. That just seemed odd.
All of the negatives were minor. We loved the food and will be back.

Elections 2014

candidates
Elections are upon us again. The gubernatorial election is getting the most press in Florida but we don’t expect to cover statewide races on West Boca News. The exception would be if one of the candidates does something here. Instead we will focus on local races.
Party primaries and some other elections are scheduled for August 26th. The general election is November 4th.
Races brewing in West Boca News include:
County Commission District 4 (parts of West Boca east of the Turnpike) pits incumbent Republican Steven Abrams against Democrat Andrew O’Brien.
d4-map
There are two contested judge races. Both are in Circuit Court, groups 14 and 30. These are county-wide races and as such they cover West Boca.
Congressional districts 21 (west of the Turnpike) and 22 (east of the Turnpike). Both races have multiple candidates filed.

State Senate district 34 (east of the Turnpike) – the seat is currently held by Maria Sachs. Jonathan Jamal Marc has filed to run for the seat but we see no campaign activity so there’s a strong chance this is the last time we’ll mention the race.
State House districts 81 (west of Turnpike) and 91 (east of Turnpike). Two Democrats have filed and no Republican, so any coverage will likely be limited to a primary. In 91 only the incumbent Slosberg has filed.
We met with a judge candidate this morning and will be writing an article about that shortly. One other judge candidate has reached out to us and we expect to meet within a couple weeks and write about that one too.
