Fundraiser at Meatball Room for Leukemia Patient

Local cancer patient Randi Heller is having a fundraiser at The Meatball Room on May 27th at 6 pm, a wine tasting event supporting her “road to recovery.”

Heller was diagnosed at age 30 in July of 2013 with Acute Myeloid Leukemia.
For the next 6 months she underwent five rounds of chemotherapy and five hospital stays lasting from 2-4 weeks each. In February of this year she went through a bone marrow / stem cell transplant procedure from an unrelated donor.

She relapsed this month and is currently in the hospital getting more chemotherapy and treatments.
Heller tells us:

My medical expenses are not fully covered. This includes deductibles, co-payments, prescriptions, doctor visits and hospital stays. The medical bills are insane.

May Lecture Series at West Boca Medical Center

West Boca Medical Center is holding a series of medical lectures this month. Light refreshments are served at all lectures. Call 866-904-9262 to register.

Lisa Neu, RN, MSN, CANP-BC will be speaking on May 9th regarding Anti-Aging and Nutrition: Facts and Fantasy. The discussion will take place at the Medical Building at 9960 Central Park Blvd, Boca Raton at noon.

The Breast Cancer Support Group, led by Anne-Marie Sawicki, MS, RN, IBCLC, will be May 19th at noon. The Group will meet at the Education Center at 21644 State Rd 7, Boca Raton.

Clive Woods, MD, an orthopedist, will present Achilles Injuries: To Repair or not to Repair? on May 20th. His presentation will take place at the Education Center at 5:30 p.m.

Reflexology Coming to Loggers' Run

West Boca News was in Loggers’ Run Plaza today and we saw that a new tenant is coming in between the post office and Monkey Joe’s.
Reflexology is:

an alternative medicine … involving … pressure to the feet, hands, or ears …. It is based on … a system of zones and reflex areas that … reflect an image of the body on the feet and hands ….

Like many types of alternative medicine, there are critics who doubt its effectiveness. West Boca News takes no position on that, and we don’t know whether this storefront will be an office for practicing reflexology or perhaps a store for related products. When we find out we will let our readers know.

West Boca Doctor Writes Book

West Boca eye surgeon Frank J. Weinstock released a new book this year, I’ve Been Thinking: And It Might Save Your Life (And Vision). Published by Trimark Press in Deerfield Beach, two things stand out about the book.
First, the cover (top of this article) is very catchy. It really grabbed our attention and made it clear there was going to be something about eyes. Second, the font size is significantly larger than we usually see in a paperback. Below for comparison, you can see the text from Weinstock’s book on the right next to the next book we’re reading (Age of Context by Robert Scoble and Shel Israel) and you can see the Weinstock’s text is much larger. Oddly there is no mention of this font choice anywhere in the book or even in the pages about the book on Amazon and Trimark.

The book is essentially a collection of essays written by Dr. Weinstock, some or all of which may have appeared as columns in Boca News or some other publication. In some ways it looks like the audience was an afterthought. Some essays are written to doctors, others to patients, and still others to people interested in healthcare policy.
The first section is all over the map in covering various aspects of medicine and health care. The second and third sections focus more on the eyes and ophthalmology and were more appealing to this reader.
A medical doctor and Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, Frank Weinstock lives in West Boca and has family here as well. He has been a professor of ophthalmology at FAU, University of Miami and elsewhere. He previously practiced medicine in Canton, Ohio.
