Parking at Delray Marketplace

Open a few months now, Delray Marketplace seems to be a success. The restaurants are busy. The Frank Theatres Cinebowl & Grille is a fun place and also seems packed. Here’s a panorama shot from inside.

There is, however, a big problem. The parking stinks. It’s completely inadequate. We don’t know where the blame lies, whether on the developer or the county. Probably both.
We’ve been here four or five times and parking has never been easy. If you come on a Friday or Saturday night for a movie, expect to park a quarter mile away near the Publix. In the photo below you get some idea how far that is.

Even the valet parking is problematic. Below is a photo of the line waiting for the valet in front of Burt & Max’s.

The parking problem will get worse. There are several places opening soon. The added traffic will exacerbate the situation.
We are hopeful that something will be done. We’ve heard rumors of a parking garage but nothing official.
Delray Marketplace is already great (other than the parking problem). Some, like Jeff Eats, wrongly predicted failure. He mocked the It’s Sugar candy store which was packed tonight.

With The Bridges filling up and more developments on the way, it’s not a stretch to picture another plaza like this in the not to distant future.

And hopefully the next one will get the parking right from the get go.

Ammo Shortage Continues

Widespread ammunition shortages continue to affect stores. The photo below shows the sparse shelves at the Coconut Creek Walmart.

20130410-102618.jpg
The most common calibers are nowhere to be seen. Nothing for the most popular rifles either – no .223, 7.62×39, nor .308.
What is on the shelves? Ammo for relatively unpopular rifles such as 7mm, .243, .270, 300, and 30-06. There is also a limited amount of shotgun cartridges.
We have seen this at this store for several months now. Occasionally we see small quantities of .308. Once we saw a few boxes of 9mm and there was a line of people buying it.
Online the situation may be improving slightly but many stores are out of stock on the most common ammunition.

Pita Pan on 441 Near Sandalfoot

Love this name – Pita Pan is a true Mom and Pop store selling products that seem focused on Israelis and devout Jews. The store is almost hidden behind one of our favorite restaurants, Sushi Yoshee, on the west side of 441 south of Marina, and just north of Loxahatchee.

Mom is Rachel Vidal, who we did not see there yesterday. Pop is Solomon. We think he goes by Solly or Souly, but I misplaced the card.
The small shop has shelves filled with things you probably will not find at a supermarket. Many are packaged with Hebrew, usually with English as well.

There are also some coolers with kefir (across between sour cream, cream cheese and yogurt), cottage cheese, frozen pita, and various salads.

And as the name suggests, there are baked goods. This includes pita (fresh and frozen), challah, and even soufganiyot (think jelly donut).

We took home some pita, kefir, and soufganiyot. It was all good. Worth a look if you want to try something different.

Tire Kingdom Oil Change Ripoff at Boca Greens and Sandalfoot

Tire Kingdom is advertising an oil change and tire rotation for $19.99. Here’s the initial image ad on their website:

The full page with the deal is here: Tire Kingdom $19.99 deal.

Select – $29.99
Our basic oil change plus a DNA Kit analysis to measure the health of all your vehicle’s fluids
Advantage – $39.99

Premier – $60.99

I called Tire Kingdom at Boca Greens to confirm they had this deal and make an appointment. “Luis” told me to just come in and ask for him. When I got there Luis told my car (a 2012 Acura MDX) requires synthetic oil, so I would have to have the Premier level oil change for $60.99. That’s triple the cost. I walked out angry.
Then I checked the owners manual. It specifically says conventional motor oil is fine and synthetic is not required. It requires 5W-20 motor oil.
Having had previous experience with the Tire Kingdom at Sandalfoot, I called there next. I mentioned on the phone that I have a 2012 Acura MDX and was told that yes, the $19.99 deal does apply to it.
When I got there I was told that the deal only applies to 5W-30 and 10W-30 motor oil because they have that in bulk, and that they only have 5W-20 in bottles and they had to charge me the $39.99 price for it. On top of that was a $3 oil disposal fee and taxes, for a total of about $45. I can understand the taxes, but the oil disposal should not be an extra charge.
At this point I just wanted to get it done so I went ahead and had it done for the $45. Then I came home to vent about the experience here.
Note the Terms and Conditions from the web page, below:
Terms & Conditions
Offer valid on first six quarts of oil and does not include additional quarts if needed. Price does not include state or local fees. $24.99 applies to Basic oil change only. Other oils available at additional cost. Most vehicles. Not valid with other offers. No cash value. See store for details.
My oil change did not require synthetic or synthetic blend oil. 5W-20 is available in conventional form, such as Pennzoil, Valvoline,  and Quaker State.
Short story, Tire Kingdom at Boca Greens tried to rip me off. Tire Kingdom at Sandalfoot ripped me off less, but still ripped me off.
