Pedestrian Hit-and-Run Tuesday Night on 441

Last night we were heading out to the grocery store and noticed this tweet:

Since we ended up at the Sandalfoot Publix, we headed over to the intersection of SW 18th (Marina) and 441 to take a look. The incident was mostly resolved but deputies were on scene clearing it up.

There were still flares burning on the sidewalk on the northeast corner along SW 18th.

We could also see residue in the roadway on SW 18th from what we think were flares.

Palm Beach County Fire Rescue reported that they found a man in the roadway who had been struck by a vehicle and he was transported to Delray Medical Center for as a trauma patient. We have heard reports that this was a hit-and-run with the vehicle driving away.
One of our readers shared this photo with us from the scene. It’s not pretty, but far enough away that you can’t tell much from it. As with the majority of these stories today, hit and runs on pedestrians seem to be climbing, if you ever find yourself being involved in a hit and run you will benefit greatly from hiring an attorney that specializes in pedestrian accidents earlier rather than later.

We don’t see any arrests in the Sheriff’s blotter today for hit-and-run so it appears the driver has not been caught yet. If anyone has any ideas, please notify Crime Stoppers or let us know and we’ll forward tips to the Sheriff.

Accident on Powerline

accident-fire
A reader alerted us to an accident earlier today and sent us three photos of the aftermath. Above you can see a car engulfed in flames.
This occurred on Powerline Road near Boca Pointe and Canary Palm (between Palmetto Park Road and SW 18th). In the next photo you can a lot of smoke coming up from the wreck, filling the air up and over the roadway.

Last is a shot showing a car off the road near a wall or hedge (on the west side).

Our reader tipster had the following description:

The car against the wall I saw before I dropped off someone in the plaza at Camino go through a stop sign and pull out and almost wreck just before this happened. It was driving erratic. I don’t know was driving because all I could see was a handicap sign but it looked to me they either couldn’t see over the steering wheel or on a death mission.

We thank our readers for tips like these.

Accident on 441: Photos

Yesterday while working on a story about the work at Glades and 441, we heard fire engines. Then we saw the accident that had just happened on 441, mostly in the northbound lanes headed toward Glades Road.

If you look close in the picture above (click on it for a larger view) you can see the Sports Authority sign in the background.

As we understand it, the Infiniti in the center of the above picture was traveling northbound and the other car, with a teenage driver, was coming southbound and attempted to make a left turn or U-turn in front of them. The passenger in the Infiniti appeared to have a leg injury and you can see her on a stretcher to the side of the car. We think the young driver may have been ticketed.

Above is another shot of the scene, taken as the first responders were helping her onto the stretcher.
On the lighter side, as we were walking up to the accident scene we noticed an iguana, which you can see in the lower left of the picture below. The accident is on the far right, and you can also see how it backed up traffic on the left. 441 was limited to just the right lane. Cars were turning into the plaza as a detour.

The iguana can apparently tell I’m a lawyer. As I got closer he ran down the hill and jumped into the water to get away from me.
