Top 7 Pizza Places in West Boca: Survey Results

brooklyn-boys-boca
Seven West Boca pizza places topped our survey and the winner in a close call is Brooklyn Boys in Shadowood Square. Brooklyn Boys had the highest number of “Great” votes and the highest weighted average vote with 4.01. More details are below with full results at bottom.
The ratings were set up with 5 as Great, 3 as Average, and 1 as Terrible; 4 and 2 were not specifically identified but we would call them good and poor, respectively.
anthonys-coal-fired
Coming in a very close second was Anthony’s Coal Fired Pizza in the Shoppes at Boca Grove on Powerline, with a weighted average of 3.99. Third place went to Mama’s Pizza and Pasta in Hampton Square (Kimberly between 441 and Lyons) with a 3.93.
Three others were in a virtual tie for fourth place including Thick & Thin in Sandalfoot Square (3.88), Domenic’s II in Westwinds of Boca near Home Depot (3.87) and Nino’s on Beracasa Way (3.86). In seventh place with a still respectable 3.80 was Stella’s in Boca Greens.
Mama’s is the only one of the top seven we haven’t tried yet but we hope to get there soon. We’ve tried the other six and like them all. Brooklyn Boys, Anthony’s and Thick & Thin can all be insanely busy at times. Anthony’s is the best sit-down experience. Thick & Thin is okay for sit-down if you can get a table. Stella’s has become our regular for delivery.
After Stella’s there was a significant drop to #8 Dominic’s (Glades near Boca Rio) with a 3.58. All others scored below 3.50.
Other notes about the survey and the results:
Several people mentioned Tony Dell’s on Sandalfoot Blvd. It closed a few months ago. In its place is the new City Boys Pizza which had a perfect zero violations in their licensing inspection last week.
We asked readers about East Boca pizza places in the comments at the bottom of the survey. The ones mentioned the most were Tomasso’s on Palmetto Park just east of I-95, Boca’s Best at Dixie and Palmetto Park, Tucci’s near Mizner Park, Renzo’s and Augy’s. In the rest of South Florida, Primanti Brothers in Fort Lauderdale was mentioned the most along with Mellow Mushroom (Delray and maybe West Palm Beach).
chuck-e-cheese-boca-raton
At the bottom of the survey Chuck E Cheese had by far the worst rated pizza with a 1.45. Over two-thirds of the 303 people who rated it called it terrible, and only seven rated it better than average.
Five others were rated worse than a 2:

  • Sweet Tomatoes (Beracasa) — 1.99
  • Papa John’s (Glades near Boca Rio) — 1.93
  • Domino’s (Boca Grove) — 1.81
  • Strike’s Bowling — 1.77
  • Pizza Hut (St. Andrews) — 1.75

The Pizza Hut on 441 near SW 18th squeaked by with a 2.05, and the dubious distinction of having the second highest number of “terrible” votes. National delivery chain Papa John’s on 441 near Sandalfoot had 299 votes with a 2.13. The Domino’s in Mission Bay had a 2.17.
In the mediocre category, The Meatball Room scored a perfectly average 3.00 in the survey though it only got a total of 129 votes. Rotelli’s in Mission Bay had 300 votes averaging 2.86. Mama’s NYC in Logger’s Run had a 2.47, though the ownership changed recently and it’s unclear how many votes were based on the previous owner.

Pei Wei Coming to Glades & 441? Business Update

pei-wei-beracasa
We have several business stories to report. The biggest is Pei Wei. We’ve learned that the new construction in Westwinds of Boca (SE corner of Glades and 441) will include a Pei Wei Asian Diner. We have confirmed that there will be a total of five tenants in the new building, and that two of the other tenants will be a VisionWorks eyeglass store and a European Wax type place. All five tenants will be national chains, though we don’t yet know what the last two will be.
On the north side of Glades we’ve confirmed that Lime Fresh Mexican Grill will be coming to Shadowood, next to Sybarite Pig. Lime Fresh will be using the outdoor patio. We were wondering if the two would share the patio similar to how World of Beer in Promenade encourages other restaurants to deliver food, but apparently that’s not in the plans.
Also in Shadowood we noticed that the parking lot next to the new Walgreens has reopened. And we learned that a storefront near that will soon be filled with a Boca Nail Bar, expected to open early in 2015.
No word yet on the space used by the current Walgreens. As we understand it there are ongoing negotiations with potential tenants.
Further west a reader tipped us off that the China Cafe restaurant in Loggers Run (next to the post office) was not answering their phone. We stopped by today. There’s a sign on the door that says they closed temporarily on September 26th due to a personal emergency. The door was open and we were able to speak to the owner. He didn’t elaborate on the reason, but said he hopes to reopen in the next couple weeks.
Last, we visited the Shadowood Theater and experienced the new layout with reclining seats. It was very comfortable, and also a lot easier to get in and out of the rows.

12 of the 16 theaters are complete and the last four (to the left as you walk in) are currently blocked off.

For this last photo there was a language barrier so we decided to block out the faces since permission was unclear.

Lime Fresh Mexican Coming to Shadowood

20120829-123623.jpg
West Boca residents will be getting another quick service Mexican restaurant soon. Broward Palm Beach New Times reports that Lime Fresh Mexican Grill will come to Shadowood Square in the Spring of 2015.
From the Shadowood site plan, we’re guessing it will be located in the “outbuilding” facing 441. The report says it will be 2000 square feet and the space next to Sybarite Pig is listed as about that size.

The map shows an outdoor patio though it’s unclear at this point if they’ll use it. We left a message for the property manager.
Shadowood Square is on the northeast corner of Glades and 441.

Lime Fresh will compete with Chipotle in Westwinds of Boca, and Tijuana Flats in Mission Bay Plaza. We previously reviewed the Lime Fresh Mexican Grill at Promenade in Coconut Creek.
For those wanting Mexican with more traditional table service, we also recently reviewed Blue Agave on 441 in Parkland.
Update: Based on a reader question, below is an image showing a street-level view of where we think the Lime Fresh will be.

Regal Shadowood Adding Reclining Seats

20131004-133832.jpg
Last year we reported that the Regal Shadowood theater would undergo a renovation. We were there a few days ago and the work has started with a couple theaters closed on the east end of the hallway (to the right after you hand over your ticket).
We were told then that the renovation would be in February of 2014. Obviously it’s taken longer than that. As we understand it the theaters will now have reclining seats. The upgrade will not include stadium seating.

Regal expects the renovation to be completed in December.

Shadowood & Westwinds Construction Progress

20140725-122221-44541486.jpg
We see a lot of progress in Shadowood Square and Westwinds of Boca, the two plazas on the east side of 441 at Glades Road. We’ve reported on these multiple times: Here and there for example.
In Shadowood, the shell of the future Walgreens is either done or nearly so. Workers were active on site this morning. Construction materials are piled up and ready to go.
On the south side of Glades in Westwinds of Boca (Home Depot & Publix), something big is coming.
Below is a panorama shot that stretches from the AT&T store of the far left to Boston Market on the far right. 441 is in the background of most of the picture. There’s a lot going on.

On the side closer to Glades we were able to get a better view. We think the big structures will underlay the parking but that’s a guess.
