GOT YOUR BACON!! Pigs Cuff and Stuff Wolf

Early this morning reports began surfacing on Twitter of a large and aggressive canine menacing homes across West Bacon. This evening local PBSO deputies coordinated with the county SWAT team to corral Valerius Geist (above, 19) inside The Bricks just north of Clint Moore.
According to the probable cause affidavit, Geist first attacked a new home in Sandalstraw just west of 441 near the Cumberland Farms. After destroying that house he chased the occupant, Larry, who ran to his brother Darryl’s new house in Bacon Wood North.
Geist allegedly destroyed that house as well, and then followed the brothers down Yamato, up Lyons and into The Bricks where they hid in the mansion of their other brother Darryl.
Geist exhausted himself trying to destroy this third house, and deputies bravely pounced on him after he passed out. West Bacon News spoke with local PBSO Captain Mark Porkenberg who said he was relieved they were able to get Geist under control without anyone getting hurt.
PBSO then took Geist up north where he was booked. He is being represented by Public Defender Carey Hwecantspellhername. Per court records he has had 47 previous cases including 12 felonies starting at the age of 14. All of his previous cases were dropped by the State’s Attorney. Charged with multiple counts including aggravated assault with deadly breath, vandalism, resisting an officer without violence, and attempted murder, he was released on $3000 bond and will be coming to your neighborhood sometime after midnight.
From his Facebook account, Geist appears to be an avid basketball fan, especially of Kevin Love and the Minnesota Timberwolves. His reported address is southeast of the corner of Lyons and Palmetto Park Road, and he’s a student at West Rio Hills High. Principal Frank Giblet blamed The Obama-Holder Justice Department for keeping the school district from disciplining troubled kids.

Our other arrest to report happened a couple days ago. West Bacon High’s baseball star, Igpay Atinlay (17), was charged with domestic battery and grand theft. Allegedly he took his sister’s iPad and she called 911. He is expected to be released tomorrow morning so he can make it to the next game.

Editorial: How Stupid Are You?

Warning: This post contains coarse language and other things that some readers might find offensive.

covella-lutz
A couple days ago we reported one of our routine crime stories, which included the arrests of three teens from West Boca High. Two of them were Tommy Covella and Joey Lutz, who responded to the article by posting comments on Facebook. Their responses, along with comments from others, prompted this editorial.
Their comments didn’t start off that bad:
covella-lutz-start
While Covella claimed he was innocent in the above comment, he’s still not helping himself. As any lawyer would tell you, you should not be making public comments about your arrest. It’s not going help your case. It also doesn’t help you with the public when you use coarse language and, as Lutz did in his comment, say that you’re laughing about it. Getting arrested is not funny.
Mr. Covella and Mr. Lutz: When I was your age and we got caught doing something wrong, we didn’t shoot our mouths off in public about it. We were embarrassed. By the way, I was your age once and my friends and I did do things we shouldn’t have. But we were mostly smarter about it than you and never got caught for anything anywhere near this serious.
Of course it got worse. Covella contradicted himself in a mini-rant:
covella-rant
Here Mr. Covella admits he had a weapon on him, asserting that it wasn’t nunchucks but rather brass knuckles. Why would you admit that you had a weapon on you at all? That doesn’t help your case.
Next Covella decided to threaten us with legal action. Since posting it Covella deleted this comment and a couple others, but not before we took screenshots:
covella-illegal
We had a similar experience when we wrote our Spanish River Thugs article. And we previously wrote an article about why we will continue to cover crime stories on West Boca News.
But this is the kind of moment that led to this editorial and its headline: How Stupid Are You?
Mr. Covella, if you had read the whole article you might have noticed that I am a lawyer. I am not impressed when teen criminals offer their opinions about what’s illegal. You make yourself look like an idiot when you say stupid things like this.
If you made the extra effort to do a little research about me you’d realize you want me on your side. I’m a criminal defense lawyer. The way you’re going, you may need someone like me at some point in your life.

In another now-deleted comment, Mr. Covella tried to talk tough:
covella-false
This one has a lot in it. First of all, nothing we said was false. We report the facts as we find them. We asked Mr. Covella to let us know what was false and he had no response. Second, we’re not telling “random people”. We are telling our readers, most of whom live in West Boca.
Now, to the meat of it:
Mr. Covella, four kids smoking pot in a van is not a team. I’m not hiding. My name is on the article – in three places. And manly? You have no idea what it means to be a man. A man takes responsibility for his actions. A man stands by his family and supports them – he doesn’t embarrass them like you’re doing now. Getting caught smoking pot in a van with your friends doesn’t make you manly.
Lutz and others used a variation of the “N word” in their comments:
lutz-nigga
healey-skolnick-nigga
nigga-fuck-pigs
Are you kids that clueless? You don’t say that word publicly. Maybe you can say it with your friends while you’re smoking in the van. But you say it in public and it makes you look like stupid racists. Shut up!
For more on the use of the word, here’s a video with Charles Barkley and Shaq:

As for Ms. Rodgriguez’ comment, a lot of people seem to care. Nearly 5000 people have read the article so far. No one is acting like they murdered someone. We just had that with the murder at Jimmy the Greek. We get the difference. Do you?
We had a comment on our website that was similar to hers:
john-not-news
Dear John: Yes it’s news. And no it’s not “real gay” to write a story about it. Gay? You sound like another prejudiced moron. Get a vocabulary. Use higher level language. Call it “pedestrian.” Look it up – it has another meaning besides a person walking. And while I personally agree with you that driving after marijuana is not particularly dangerous, saying that doesn’t help your credibility with most readers.
Cinn’s comment was another inspiration for the headline:
cinn-dumb
“Are you dumb or something?” No Cinn, you’re the dumb one here. Getting arrested is a big deal. With all the stupid things I did as a kid, I never got arrested. Lutz is charged with a felony. That’s a really big deal.
Stuff like this does happen all the time. Fortunately it only seems to involve a small segment of the population. Being in that group is a bad place to be.
The last comment of note came from Mr. Trevor Evans, who wins the prize for stupid:
trevor-evans-threat
Mr. Evans, publicly threatening a journalist with violence violates two Florida statutes: Stalking and Assault, and as a result you may be getting a visit from PBSO in the near future. A man was arrested for making a joke on Twitter that a reporter took as a threat back in December, and what he did is less than what you just did. You also just made yourself the first suspect if any harm should come to me. And to top all that off, you just gave a George Zimmerman defense to anyone who shoots you.
Let’s all hope for Mr. Evans’ sake that we don’t read about him in the Darwin Awards next year.
There’s a moral to this story:
1. Don’t commit crimes.
2. If you ignore #1 and get arrested, your mugshot and story will probably appear in West Boca News or some other media.
3. Don’t talk publicly – or even privately – about any of it unless your lawyer gives the okay.

West Boca High? Weapons, Drugs and Minors

Story updated below regarding the aggravated assault with a deadly weapon charge against Paul Maimon. Also, in addition to the comments on this post, there are numerous comments on the Facebook post.
covella-lutz-juarez
West Boca High’s Thomas “Tommy” Covella (left, 18), Joseph “Joey” Lutz (center, 18) and Rafael Juarez (right, 19) were all booked within 5 minutes of each other early Tuesday morning after being arrested by PBSO deputies. All three are charged with contributing to the delinquency of a minor. Covella is also charged with concealed carry of a weapon. Lutz and Juarez are accused of possessing drug equipment and Lutz is also accused of possessing marijuana with intent to sell, manufacture or distribute. That last one gets Lutz into felony territory, and meant he got to spend an extra seven hours in custody. All were released the same day.
juarez-potJuarez apparently advocates no jail for marijuana. We generally agree, though we don’t approve of sharing it with minors. That should stay illegal.
From Miami, Juarez is scheduled to graduate from West Boca this year and is or was a member of Calvary West Boca. Lutz was a solid baseball player when he was younger and another fan of legalizing marijuana. Covella is originally from the Rochester, New York area, likes hockey, and sadly for him he’s a Bills fan. Here in Florida he may have been involved with the Sheriff’s Eagle Academy for troubled teens. Two of the young men live near Sandalfoot just west of 441, while the third lives in Boca Winds.
nunchucksThe three were in a van just south of Boca Lyons Plaza, with a fourth young male who is the minor to whose delinquency they’re all accused of contributing. The arresting officer said he smelled marijuana in the probable cause affidavit. Covella had metal nunchucks, an Asian martial arts weapon.
Lutz had over $500 in cash on him. Drugs and equipment found in the van included a “large water bong,” a metal grinder, a scale and a zip lock with over 75 grams of marijuana.
It’s unclear why they were in that neighborhood, and why Covella was not charged with a DUI for driving while impaired by drugs.
Lutz had a “retail theft” charge from October that was dropped by prosecutors. Juarez had a marijuana and loitering/prowling charges a year ago that were dropped by prosecutors. Covella has no prior criminal history in the county records.

maimon-cartagena
Paul Maimon (above left, 25) was booked Wednesday morning for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, and released Thursday evening. His reported address is southeast of the corner of SW 3rd and 441. He has connections in Coral Springs and also in Israel. Court records show a previous battery charge in 2012 that was dropped by prosecutors. We are working to get more information on this case.
Update: We obtained the probable cause affidavit. Mr. Maimon is accused of threatening his father with a large “paver” stone, because the father would not let him use the car. This occurred at approximately 2:30 am on Wednesday morning. The case is being treated as a domestic incident.
Guillermo Cartagena (right, 35) was booked early Thursday morning for simple battery. He has not been released yet. The case is being treated as a domestic battery. FDLE records show that he is wanted by Broward County for a probation violation. Broward court records show four different felony cases against Mr. Cartagena dating back to 2008. Three of them (aggravated stalking, grand theft, and possession of heroin) were resolved in 2010 with probation. His reported address is west of 441 between Winikoff and Sandalfoot.

Boca and West Boca DUI Report

Hernandez-Gutierrez, James Young, and Scott Parmelee
Hernandez-Gutierrez, James Young, and Scott Parmelee

Alberto Hernandez-Gutierrez (above left, 19) was arrested by Boca Police and booked early on the 17th. His reported address is an apartment in Boca Entrada west of 441 near the Broward line.
West Boca’s James Young (above center, 58) was arrested by Boca PD and booked early on the 20th for DUI and for refusing a DUI test after a license suspension. The latter charge suggests a previous DUI and we see what looks like one in the court records from way back in 1997. His reported address is an apartment in Bella Lago near the west end of Boca Del Mar Drive.
Scott Parmelee (right, 44), who may use the nickname Boca Scott, was arrested and booked early on the 22nd by the Sheriff. The charges include DUI, drug equipment, driving with a suspended license. He faces a probation violation due to an incident back in July of 2012 where he was adjudicated guilty of attempted burglary. He was also found guilty on a cocaine charge back in 2006. Parmelee’s reported address is in Boca Country Club northwest of the intersection of Congress and Clint Moore.

charlotin-melillo-quick
West Boca’s Nixon Charlotin (above left, 35) was arrested for DUI by Boca PD and booked in the morning of the 23rd. The Boca blotter shows Florida Highway Patrol was involved, probably because it happened on I-95. His reported address is an apartment in Boca Entrada.
Nicole Melillo (center, 31) was arrested by Delray PD for DUI and booked early on the 22nd. Her reported address is in the Wimbledon Villas near Town Center, and she may work for a health care related company. While she does have some history of traffic tickets dating back to 2004, we see nothing more serious in the county.
Michael Quick (right, 46) was arrested by Boca PD and booked early on the 20th. The charges include DUI and Hit and Run with property damage. Mr. Quick made news back in December when he got caught on camera stealing donations from a church in Boca. We see over 40 cases in the county court system for him dating back to 1997, including 13 felonies.

Narcotics Overdose Prevention at WB High

The NOPE Task Force of Palm Beach County (Narcotics Overdose Prevention & Education) will conduct a forum for parents the 31st (not this Monday but next Monday) at 7 pm in the West Boca High School auditorium.
The event is sponsored by the PTSAs of Loggers’ Run Middle School and West Boca High.
NOPE-Flyer-800
While West Boca News likes the idea of such a forum, we do not agree with the NOPE legislative agenda. Their efforts to increase federal control of prescription pain medication will do nothing to protect our kids. Current controls already cause serious difficulties for people with genuine medical problems.
