It isn’t rare to walk through the local supermarket and see products stamped with an “organic” or “all natural” sticker. The amount of recyclable bags is increasing, and being “eco-friendly” has become a lifestyle statement. While “going green” may seem like a fad, healthy eating and living in a sustainable fashion is not.
Jason McCobb, owner of Farmer Jay Pure Organics, is s Delray Beach grower who knows that “going green” begins with the basics: Know what you eat.
Farmer Jay offers fresh, chemical-free vegetables to local restaurants. Other than providing the freshest local ingredients to restaurants, Farmer Jay brings a sustainable lifestyle to the community by helping other gardeners (from the beginner to the expert) create successful gardens to be proud of. He offers the service of building custom-made raised beds for gardens, all made of rot-resistant cedar that is certifiably sustainable, and can have a self-watering system. Local restaurants, such as Tanzy of Boca Raton’s iPic theaters, already boast beautiful gardens from Farmer Jay.
Farmer Jay also offers lectures and events that educate the community on topics such as how to have a garden in your own backyard to understanding soil. The upcoming event, called ‘Farm Anywhere– Size Does Not Matter!’ will be held on Saturday, November 19th from 1-2:30 at the Ellenville Garden Center (220 NE 11th Street, Boca Raton) The cost of the workshop is $25. South Florida Prohibition Documentary
Steve Waxman put together a great documentary about alcohol prohibition in South Florida. Here’s the trailer:
It’s called Prohibition and the South Florida Connection. You can also see some more information about it on IMDB.
I DVR’d it from WXEL (the local PBS station). If you get a chance to see it, it’s a good way to spend an hour.
Makes you wonder why we haven’t figured out that drug prohibition is a failure.
Avenue Q at West Boca Theatre – Tonight!
Slow Burn Theatre is putting on the show Avenue Q in West Boca starting tonight. The performances are at 12811 Glades Road, also known as West Boca Community High School.
We’ve seen Avenue Q. It’s a great show but parents should be careful – it would probably carry an R rating in the movies. The name Avenue Q and the show itself are both twists on Sesame Street, and it gets pretty twisted.
The show is on tonight and tomorrow (Friday and Saturday, October 26th and 27th) at 8 pm, and Sunday at 2 pm, and again the next weekend.

iPic Theaters at Mizner Park
We had the chance to catch a matinee at the new iPic Theaters at Mizner Park today. With a free membership we got a “premium plus” seat including popcorn for $18 (matinee price).
It was a very nice experience. Unlike a typical movie theater, it doesn’t feel crowded and the seat is truly comfortable. Together with great sound, classy interior design and good service, this takes a trip to the movies to a new level.
It may cost more than a regular movie, but not that much more and well worth it.
We saw Rock of Ages which took full advantage of the sound system. The story was weak but it was still a lot of fun.
