Luis Alicea, a veteran of Major League Baseball as a player and coach, will speak at the next West Boca Chamber breakfast on Tuesday, June 10th. Chamber breakfasts are held at Boca Greens starting at 7:30 am.
Alicea is now Executive Director of Baseball at Elev8 Sports Institute
in Delray Beach.
Luis will tell stories about his childhood and all the obstacles he faced as he worked his way into the majors.

Registration for the fall 2014 session of fast pitch softballs is now open. All girls ages 4 through 16 and all experience levels are welcome. Regular registration is open until August 11, 2014. Registration is $135 – $155. A $50 late fee will be charged after that date.
There will be two free clinics this summer on August 2nd and August 9th. The general skills clinic is 9-10:30 a.m. for tee ball, 8u and 10u; 10:30 a.m.-12 p.m. for 12u and 16u. The pitching clinic is 10:30 -11:30 a.m. for 8u/10u and 12-1 p.m. for 12u/16u.
The evaluations for all age groups excluding tee ball are August 15th or 16th. Evaluations on August 15th begin at 5:30 p.m for 8u/10u and 6:45 p.m. for 12u/16u; on August 16th they begin at 8:45 a.m. for 8u/10u and 10:00 a.m. for 12u/16u. Practices begin on August 23rd and the first games start September 8th. The season runs through November 1st.
Pure Barre is a new fitness studio that recently opened in the Westwinds of Boca (Home Depot Plaza). According to their advertising, it is a total body workout that lifts your seat, tones your thighs, abs and arms in record breaking time. Classes are 55 minutes and designed for all levels of fitness.
One class costs $23 and a package of 5 classes costs $105. Currently there is a New Client Special, 1 month unlimited for $100. The studio is open Monday and Wednesday from 6 a.m. to 6:45 p.m. and Tuesday and Thursday from 8:30 a.m. to 7:45 p.m. It is also open Friday, Saturday and Sunday mornings. The West Boca Chamber has worked out two deals with the Miami Marlins for upcoming games in June.

Two of our three local high schools will meet in an epic battle of academic wits tonight on Becon-TV at 7 pm. It’s Spanish River vs. West Boca.
School Duel consists of four rounds of questions, covering a variety of subject areas.
1. Warning Shot round, featuring toss up questions that may be answered by either team.
2. Joust, matches individual players head-to-head, with the winner earning his/her team the chance to answer three more bonus questions worth up to 30 additional points.
3. Rapid Fire round, where teams try to answer up to ten questions in a sixty-second time limit.
4. Final Showdown, consists of a series of toss-up questions.
Players get prizes from BrightStar Credit Union and Chick-fil-A.
