City Fish Market

City Fish Market is perhaps the most prominent restaurant in West Boca. Of course by our definition it’s arguably not in West Boca as it is just east of the Turnpike, but we figure its close enough.
It’s a big place with a variety of seating options. We chose to sit outside.

There are five or so other rooms, including a bar area and a room perched over the lake.

It’s hard to get a good picture from the outside but we did the best we could:

We came for lunch. My partner had the sauteed Atlantic Salmon lunch entree which she reported to be very good. It came with haricot vert (green beans) and a mashed potato croquette.

I had the shrimp and scallops Alfredo lunch entree. It was a large portion with good shrimp and small bay scallops. It was a good meal. The Alfredo sauce didn’t seem traditional and had a hint of perhaps lemon.

On the whole we liked it and will come again. It seems expensive, especially for lunch, but it is a classy experience. We spent $44 with tip for the two meals and one soda.

New Restaurants Coming to Mission Bay

Mission Bay Plaza is getting not one but two new restaurants, coming soon.
We previously reviewed Tijuana Flats in Coconut Creek. This is one of our favorite restaurants and now we will have one in the heart of West Boca. Here are a few pictures of the work from today:

I met their area marketing coordinator at this morning’s chamber breakfast and they’re hoping to open on May 6th.
While I was taking the pictures I noticed that another restaurant is under way next door – FirstWatch: The Daytime Cafe.
Here’s a quick shot of that:

We don’t have a start date for that yet but we are hopeful.

Sushi Yoshee on 441

Sushi Yoshee is the best Korean food in West Boca. It’s also the only Korean food. The name suggests Japanese food and they do that well but the Korean cuisine is outstanding.
Going south on 441 Yoshee is on the right just past Sandalfoot Plaza and Marina/SW 18th St.
The interior is pleasant but unremarkable. Here’s a panorama shot.

We ordered Korean combos from the lunch menu. It comes with soup or salad and we both chose Miso Soup which was fine.

20130318-132214.jpg
The more popular combo is probably the Bul Go Gi, thinly sliced steak cooked in a sweet marinade. The combo includes kim chi (spicy pickled cabbage), white rice, dumplings in a light sweet sauce, noodles in a different light sweet sauce, and an extra – today it was Asian mushrooms.

I had the pork version, which is spicy and has noticeably fatty meat. It’s delicious if you like that sort of thing. But don’t tell your cardiologist or your gastroenterologist.

When you do this for dinner it is accompanied by little side dishes. For lunch you have to ask for it and it costs a couple bucks extra. I don’t know exactly what they are but I like them anyway.

What’s missing? In the best Korean restaurants the meat is served raw and you cook it yourself on a grill built into the table, similar to Yakiniku in Japanese cuisine. But they don’t seem to be set up for that here. And these two dishes would be served with large pieces of lettuce that you use like tortillas, along with a spicy paste. Maybe they do that for dinner. Despite that, Sushi Yoshee’s Korean is still great food and highly recommended.
With tip lunch cost a bit over $30.

Bru's Room in Coconut Creek

Bru’s Room is a huge restaurant on the southeast corner of 441 and Hillsboro (enter from Hillsboro). It looks big from the outside.

20130315-123513.jpg
But when you walk around the inside it seems even bigger. There are two areas inside, first with restaurant style seating:

And then a larger bar area:

And if that’s not enough, there’s an outdoor area in the back:

There are plenty of big screen TVs showing sports programming.
The place is named after the Dolphins’ great linebacker Bob Brudzinski., and it seems like he’s at least a part-owner. They’re growing and approaching 10 locations in South Florida.
We had a cup of chili, a steak Caesar salad and an Angus burger. The burger was good and came on a very nice roll.

Chili was okay but nothing special:

The steak Caesar salad was outstanding and an especially good lunch deal at $5.99.

Overall a solid meal. We will be back.

Sabor Latino in Weston

Early to a meeting in Weston, I had lunch at Sabor Latino, a Peruvian restaurant just west of the Sawgrass. Note that the lunch menu is not available on weekends.
It’s small inside with seating for maybe 24 people.

20130224-121909.jpg
As a free starter I was given a small dish of roasted corn and a purple corn drink (Chicha morada), the latter probably an unusual gesture from the server. Both were pleasant diversions from routine cuisine.

20130224-122705.jpg
For the main course I ordered Seco de Res. It came out as three chunks of steak with white rice and beans (refried?). Both the meat and beans had excellent flavors. The only quibble is that there should have been a little more gravy/sauce for the steak.

20130224-123513.jpg
Overall a very nice lunch. It’s a bit of a drive from West Boca but a short trip from the Sawgrass Mills mall, Markham Park, or the BB&T Center if you’re coming down for any of those.
