Kosher Chinese in Loggers Run

Update: Marcus Kosher Chinese closed in roughly the summer of 2014.
We did get to Marcus’s Kosher Chinese for lunch today. It is in Loggers Run Plaza on Palmetto, roughly 2 miles west of 441, taking the place of the former Megumi Japanese restaurant. As you can see from the photo, it’s next to the Kumon Learning Center.

While small, Marcus’s has about the nicest interior we’ve seen in a Chinese restaurant in South Florida, on a par with Uncle Tai’s near Town Center. Not that it’s stunning, but most Chinese places are drab, focused on takeout with unattractive interiors.

Marcus offers a $8 lunch special with three courses (cash only), but we saw other things we wanted.
I started with the Hot & Sour soup. I liked it but it was not what I expected – sweet with a hint of vinegar. The scallions and mushrooms were fresh and overall the contents were good. I missed the pork that is typical in this dish, but one can see why that wouldn’t be included in a restaurant with the word Kosher in the name. Similarly you won’t find any shrimp or pork dishes on the menu.

My regular dining partner had the wonton soup. The broth tasted “a little more like Matzoh Ball Soup broth”, which she liked very much.
She also had the sesame chicken. This was particularly well prepared. The meat was very good quality, and it did not have too much breading.

For an entree I had the Szechuan Beef. Like my soup, it was a little sweeter than what I’m used to. But that wasn’t a bad thing. It was spicy (as the menu warned). I’d call it the right amount of heat, but it might be a little too hot for some. It had nice bits of green vegetables and some shredded carrot.

We ordered both of our dishes with brown rice, which was just fine.
Marcus is a pleasant fellow and we chatted with him a bit. The restaurant has been open for about 8 weeks. He’s originally from Ireland with a very long stop in London.
We wish Marcus well and expect to become semi-regular visitors.

Boca Raton Power Outages From Isaac

People are asking about power outages in Boca Raton from Tropical Storm Isaac. While there are significant power outages in Palm Beach, Broward, and Miami-Dade counties, we have not heard of many outages in Boca Raton generally nor in West Boca.
For the best information on local power outages, see this link: FPL Outages Map for South Florida.
In total there may be as many as 50,000 people without power in the three counties, with about 10,000 in Palm Beach County and a bit more in each of the other counties.

Rainfall accumulations in Palm Beach County

While we got a lot of rain here in West Boca, it seems other places got hit worse. As a casual estimate West Boca had maybe 5 inches of rain over the past 24 hours.
There are reports that Wellington to the north has had 14 inches of rain with 4 more inches to come. They are facing serious flooding with canals on the verge of overflowing.
West Palm Beach and other areas closer to the ocean are facing a flash flood warning.

There is some minor flooding in West Boca. Below is a photo of a section of Glades Road partially underwater.

And near that location, in the background of the next photo you can see the water very close to a row of trees and the road behind them (in Mission Bay).

Last, a video of flooding in Wellington:

Tuesday: West Boca schools, Palm Beach County schools closed

Schools in West Boca and the rest of Palm Beach County will be closed again tomorrow (Tuesday, August 28) due to major and “unprecedented” flooding in the county. One report had 14″ of rain overwhelming Wellington, and flash flood warnings for the eastern parts of Palm Beach and Broward counties.
We have not heard of much flooding in West Boca, at least not yet.
