Sandalfoot: Home Explosion and the Media Scrum – Photos and Video

Update: The house appears to be secure. We saw a neighbor being interviewed (see video at bottom) and she said that she heard an explosion that sounded like an electrical transformer, and then heard someone climb over her fence. Government officials are reporting that the property was being used as a “grow house” for marijuana production. No word yet on any injuries.
media-sandalfoot
Sandalfoot Cove was host to numerous first responders and a media scrum. Residents reported an explosion on SW 62nd Street, which lies between Palmetto Park Road and SW 3rd Street, between Lyons and 441.

The street was full of people and emergency vehicles when West Boca News arrived. Here you can see a cameraman in the foreground, with Fire and PBSO personnel mid-ground and residents in the background.

Out on SW 3rd the TV trucks were in force:

Here you can see the house in question, with windows in obvious disarray and PBSO deputies heading around to the back of the house:

And here’s the best close-up we could get of the house.

While first responders were entering without safety equipment, a PBSO deputy told us to stay back to the other side of the street because the house might still be unstable. We didn’t believe him but obeyed anyway.
They brought out lots of heavy equipment, including the PBSO bomb squad:

Here’s some video of the scene:

And here’s part of a TV station interview with the next-door neighbor

A reader helped with research on the property. It is owned by “62nd Avenue Holdings, LLC.” That company is filed with Florida by registered agent (and real estate agent) John McCann of Boca Valley Realty on North Federal Highway.
The Sunbiz filing shows one individual who may be the owner or manager of an investor group, Mario Monello.
mario-monello
We don’t know if it’s the same person, but there was a Mario Monello involved with Lehman Brothers before the financial collapse. That Mario Monello is mentioned in this CNN story about leveraged finance back in 1989. One fictional work about the collapse has a character named Mario Monelli, perhaps an homage: The Lions’ Den.

Seeking help from Wall Street, Julie finds an unlikely defender of the American system, Mario Monelli, a Mergers and Acquisitions expert at a prestigious investment banking house, pitting him against his long time Wall Street nemesis, Barton Mulvaney, rumored to have shadowy ties to the Royal family. Mario is nervous about the idea, and whether he has the pedigree to challenge Bart. But he’s also falling in love with Julie and uses the opportunity to be around her.
Mario also heads up the Zoo Crew, a wild bunch of investment bankers who lack the breeding and education of their colleagues—but not the brains—and have dedicated themselves to helping beleaguered companies fend off corporate raiders.

We called McCann’s office and left a message. We were not the first call and we suspect Mr. McCann is wisely avoiding any public comment.
Here’s another video – firefighters entering the home after the situation stablized:

Home Explosion near Palmetto Park Road

Update: More details on our new article on the Sandalfoot home explosion, including photos and video.
CBS 12 is reporting a possible home explosion in the north end of Sandalfoot Cove, just north of SW 3rd between Lyons and 441.
Update: Palmetto is clear. All roads clear at this point. .
West Boca News will check it out and update soon. For now we recommend readers avoid the area, including that section of Palmetto Park Road.
Google Maps shows no traffic problem on Palmetto, but strangely it shows no traffic at all on the westbound section. This could be due to normally low volume at this time of day, or traffic could be blocked. But we don’t see particularly difficult traffic patterns around the area yet either.

11 Weekend Arrests: DUI, Drugs & Mischief

As always with our arrest reports, the arrestees are innocent until proven guilty. And don’t let our arrest reports scare you about West Boca – our crime rate is lower than East Boca and much lower than the county average.
chick-sheerer
James Chick (left, 28) and Gary Sheerer (right, 32) were both arrested by Delray Beach police, accused of dealing in stolen property. They were booked early Sunday morning. Chick was released about 12 hours later, while Sheerer remains in custody. By their reported addresses, the two are roommates on Watergate Circle near the Glades library.
Chick has over 4 pages of cases in the county including a couple felony arrests, though most are traffic. One was from April of 2013 where he was “adjudicated guilty by the court” of “aggravated grand retail theft” in August of 2013. He was sentenced to 9 months in county jail minus about 4 months in credit time.
Sheerer’s record is worse and he was arrested on the same April 2013 date as Chick for roughly the same offenses. He was also sentenced to about nine months, with almost six months of credit time.
santini-brenner-fraschilla
Nicole Santini (above left, 26) of the Boca Entrada – Emerald Bay Club apartments was arrested Friday night and released Saturday afternoon, charged with aggravated battery involving a deadly weapon. The court record has it marked as “dating violence.” She had a previous domestic violence misdemeanor charge in 2010 that was dropped.
18-year-old Michael Brenner (center) was arrested and released Sunday morning for possession of a controlled substance without a prescription (Percocet per the Boca Police blotter). A resident of Woodfield Hunt Club, and student at North Broward Prep, he was recruited as a baseball player by Saint Louis University, with “game-changing speed.”
Deanna Fraschilla (right, 50) of the Boca Rio Banyan townhomes was arrested Saturday for criminal mischief causing property damage, and for resisting an officer without violence. She was released a couple hours after she was booked without having to post a bond. A Google search revealed a Cape Cod arrest in 2005. In Palm Beach County, court records show mostly traffic tickets but also a felony burglary in 2008 for which she got 5 years probation.
may-dui-arrests
There were three DUI arrests from Boca this weekend. Above left is Keith Martin (23), who was booked early Saturday morning and released before noon. His reported address is in the Mizner Courts apartments off Military Trail. The former FAU student is an aspiring entrepreneur interested in new video technologies.
Adriana Capawana (center, 45) was arrested by Boca PD, booked Sunday morning and released a few hours later. The Boca police blotter indicates her blood alcohol content was 0.17, though West Boca News does not consider breath testing to be a reliable indicator of intoxication. Her reported address in Boca Country Club (near Clint Moore and Congress) appears to be owned and inhabited by an unrelated couple.
Benjamin Collins (right, 22) was also booked for DUI Saturday morning and released shortly after noon. Residing in Boca Barwood near the corner of Lyons and SW 18th, the Spanish River graduate has attended University of Texas and traveled in France.
We see no prior criminal history for any of the DUI arrestees.
wishbow-can
Margo Wishbow (center, 61) was arrested on a probation violation. That probation appears to come from a DUI arrest in February 2013. The Century Village resident has a few pages of cases in Palm Beach County with mostly misdemeanors and one felony theft in 2012 that was reduced to a misdemeanor.
Ali Can (right, 23) was booked Monday morning on charges of loitering/prowling and resisting an officer without violence. Both counts are generally vague and the Boca PD blotter is remarkably thin on details. His history is clean other than a couple of traffic cases. This one will probably be dismissed.

Villa Rosano Review

20140504-075245.jpg
We’d heard mostly good things about Villa Rosano from friends, and kept saying we should try it. Then they had a perfect “zero violations” in our restaurant inspection report. That pushed us over the top and we had dinner there last night.

20140504-075801.jpg
Villa Rosano is located between Tempura House and Brendy’s in The Reserve, the plaza on the southeast corner of 441 and Clint Moore. They do not take reservations but they do have a half hour call ahead setup (561-470-0112) which worked well for us.

20140504-080217.jpg
It’s a pleasant interior. At first glance it doesn’t seem that big but then you realize there’s more space in the back. They’ve also done a good job with acoustics – there were a lot of people but it didn’t seem loud. There’s also some outdoor seating.
The food was very good. We started with a large Caesar salad mostly consumed by the three kids in our party. Even the picky youngest one had some and liked it. They got to it before we could get picture so here’s a close up of what they missed. It was a very large salad that could serve three or four adults.

20140504-080747.jpg
The kids shared two cheese pizzas. Our waiter helpfully stopped us from ordering three. He was very attentive and the service from all the staff was outstanding. Hot bread was on the table when we sat down, a nice touch.

20140504-081328.jpg
The cheese and sauce were just right. I thought the crust was a little chewy but the kids ate it up.
My regular companion had the lasagne and she loved it.

20140504-081649.jpg
I had the Spinach Fettuccine Rosano, which came with two large prawns and chicken. At first it seemed a little bland but the savory flavor grew on me as the meal progressed.

20140504-081953.jpg
This was a great meal. Every dish was good and the portions were huge. It’s not cheap but it was worth it.
While we enjoyed it, we have heard negatives from one of our neighbors. And our friends at Worst Pizza did not like it.
