Heartless Driver in West Boca

From a reader in Mission Bay
Although this story is about me and my tragic loss, it could really about you and your pet. I live in a gated community in West Boca, am a professional, respect others, try to do good and follow the golden rule. My community is just like many others in West Boca, some with drivers who respect the fact that this is a community made up of families with children and pets and others who couldn’t care less.
maltipoo
On Friday at 5:25pm, I could have been killed. I wasn’t but my little 2 year old 10 pound Maltipoo was. Who would do such a thing? I was walking my puppy on a leash. My community doesn’t have sidewalks so I was walking on the very edge of the road, as I always do. My other dog, a seven year old Yorkie was on her leash on the other side of me. It wasn’t raining. It was still sunny at 5:25pm.
no-sidewalk
The woman who so carelessly hit my puppy drove to her house, just a few houses down from mine. She opened her garage door, drove in, and then closed the door behind her. I, on the other hand, was running as fast as I could with my one dog on her leash and my crushed dog in my arms. I was screaming.
Unfortunately, no one was anywhere around. As I ran, I felt the life leave my little puppy. Thank goodness my son was home. He wrapped up the puppy in a towel and we headed to the emergency pet center. I was hoping beyond hope that he could be saved but in my heart, I knew that his injuries were too severe.
I called the police and reported this woman. The deputy took a report and let me know that dogs aren’t people and that this was an accident. Legally I do understand this but I was very shocked. Such preventable violence stunned me. The deputy went to talk to this woman and she came over to my house without being invited to tell me that she didn’t see me or my dogs.
REALLY???? I think this was the absolute worse part of this whole horror. She DID see me, she KNEW what she did and she never stopped to help. What kind of a woman is this???
On many occasions I have seen this woman driving around the neighborhood and have made the hand gesture to her to, “slow down”. Our neighbors have done the same thing to her but she just doesn’t listen. The whole point of this story is to say to everyone, please drive carefully in your neighborhoods.
So, you will get home 15 seconds later. So, you will leave your community 15 seconds later. This time the victim was my sweet innocent puppy, but, it could have been me, or you, or your pet or your child.

Video: Halloween Thieves in Mission Bay

inflatable-theft
We’ve had a couple of complaints from readers about thieves stealing Halloween decorations in Mission Bay. Now one reader submitted a security camera video of a theft.

Joe Petrolino lives in Mission Bay’s Harbour Springs development, on the south side of Glades Road near Diego Drive. The two people in the video look like teenage girls, driving a dark colored sedan.
We’d suggest that people bring their inflatables and anything else valuable in at night. This incident apparently happened around 2 or 3 am.

Arrest in Mission Bay SWAT Incident?

David Mrofki
David Mrofki

Last night we reported on a large police presence including a SWAT team in Mission Bay. It appears that an arrest was made in conjunction with that incident.
Readers reported to us that this concerned a house on Baybreeze Way, which is just south of Glades and just west of Diego Drive (about a mile west of 441).

The Sheriff’s blotter shows an arrest of an individual with a reported address on Baybreeze Way.
mrofki-blotter
We see no criminal history for David Mrofki (59) in the three county area, other than a couple of minor traffic tickets in Broward from 1999 and 2005. If it’s the same guy, he’s worked in sales and marketing in healthcare/information-technology for many years.

The address reported for him shows in county records as owned by a woman with a different last name who works in insurance sales.
The charge against Mr. Mrofki is “aggravated assault with intent to commit a felony.” It’s a 3rd-degree felony – that’s the lowest level of felonies. He had a court appearance scheduled for this morning with Judge Kelley at the Gun Club court facility (next to the jail in West Palm Beach). Court records do not yet show the results of that appearance. Despite reports of him being armed, he was not charged on the “with a deadly weapon” version of the offense. We suspect that this case will resolve without significant jail time, though Mr. Mrofki remains in custody at this writing.

SWAT Team in Mission Bay

Update: Readers tell us the situation has resolved safely, though it will take an hour or more for life to return to normal.

Several readers notified us of heavy police activity in the Harbour Springs and Baybreeze section of Mission Bay, west of 441 on the south side of Glades Road.

There is some indication from the Sheriff’s office that a man is a danger to himself, intoxicated, armed and he has locked himself in his home. Readers have reported to us that they’ve seen as many as 15-20 police cars. One reader said 30 cars, and multiple readers mentioned the SWAT team. Some residents may have been evacuated. Two readers told us that police told them to stay inside their homes due to the danger of gunshots.
