Benjamin Schiller, an 8th grade student at Loggers’ Run Middle School, has been named to the Scholastic News Kids Press Corps, “the country’s oldest and largest student reporting program.”

For more than 15 years, the Scholastic News Kids Press Corps has delivered news to classrooms nationwide. Stories by the kid reporters appear in select issues of Scholastic classroom magazines, which are read by more than 25 million students nationwide and are available online at www.scholastic.com/news

Schiller is one of only three kids chosen from Florida, and the only one south of Orlando. He is currently working on his first article for Scholastic, about habitat protection issues in the Everglades. He tells us he is hopeful that this experience “will jump start my career in journalism.”

Ho Ho Chinese Not So Merry; 6 Restaurants in Mizner Park

ho-ho-chinese-delray
It may be easier to get a table on Christmas at Ho Ho Chinese in Delray Beach. The restaurant was hit Tuesday with 28 violations on their inspection, including 4 marked high priority:

  • Employee failed to wash hands beforechanging gloves and/or putting on gloves to work with food. CHEF AT SUSHI STATION REMOVED GLOVES AND WASHED HANDS **Corrective Action Taken**
  • Pesticide/insecticide labeled for household use only present in establishment.CAN OF RAID ON SHELVING UNIT
  • Potentially hazardous (time/temperature control for safety) food identified in the written procedure as a food held using time as a public health control has no time marking and the time removed from temperature control cannot be determined. See stop sale. SUSHI RICE 75° STOP SALE **Repeat Violation** **Admin Complaint**
  • Raw animal food stored over ready-to-eat food in walk-in cooler.RAW CHICKEN STORED OVER STRING BEANS WASHED AND BROCCOLI C **Repeat Violation**

Ho Ho had poor inspections in May as well, closed two days in a row for roaches.
Six restaurants in Mizner Park also had less than wonderful inspections.

  • Kapow Noodle Bar had the biggest numbers of the group with 19 total violations (6 high priority).
  • Villagio was right behind with 18 violations (3 high priority). Their inspection in May was worse with 25 violations and a brief closure for roaches.
  • Tanzy had 12 violations with 2 high priority.
  • The iPic Theater had 11 violations with 2 high priority.
  • Yard House also had 11 violations (5 high priority).
  • Trulucks had 9 violations (4 high priority).

Muddy Waters in Deerfield may have had the worst inspection of the week, with 15 violations including 9 marked high priority. The ones that bothered us the most were:

Live, small flying insects in kitchen, food preparation area, or food storage area.

and

Stop Sale issued on potentially hazardous (time/temperature control for safety) food due to temperature abuse. Ray [Raw] oysters. Dressings at wait station.

Muddy Waters has had bad inspections before, in May of this year and November last year where they had 30 violations and a familiar “live flies in the kitchen.” They apparently like doing the backstroke in the muddy waters.
On the good news side of things, the Boca Raton Resort had several perfect inspections including their Japanese restaurant Morimoto. The new Los Tacos, on the east side of Federal Highway north of Glades, had a perfect licensing inspection.
In West Boca, Original Pancake House had two inspections on the same day, both times recording a single minor paperwork violation. The paperwork raid extended to the Pei Wei at 441 and Glades and our friends at the Armadillo Cafe, each with the same one minor paperwork violation.
As usual, our spreadsheet for the week is below. West Boca restaurants are in bold.

Songs for a new world

Songs-Cover-PhotoToday we had the opportunity to see a unique and captivating show by the Marquee Theater Company. Songs for a new world, with music and lyrics by Jason Robert Brown, tells the stories of 2 men and 2 women trying to achieve their hopes and dreams.
This intimate musical has a very simple production. The set consisted of a cityscape and a pair of black stairs that were moved throughout the show. The actors wore black boots, jeans and denim tops. The focus was on their personal journeys as told through the songs.

All the performers had beautiful voices that expressed hope, heartbreak, bitterness and humor. They sang of love lost and found and dreams dashed. Also appearing on stage were dancers that expressed the singer’s inner emotions and played the parts of love interests.
Songs for a new world is playing now through December 20th at the Next Level Performing Arts Black Box. Tickets are $28 each and $18 for students. Upcoming performances include Jekyll & Hyde and Footloose at the West Boca Performing Arts Theater and Nunsense at Next Level.

A collision Friday between a 2015 Cadillac and a 2012 Yamaha motorcycle claimed the life of Ara Kamciyan (age 27). Both drivers were residents of Timbers of Boca on the west side of Lyons Road south of Glades. The accident occurred at the entrance to the development.

According to police report Dolores McCabe (age 72) made a left turn into the neighborhood. Kamciyan was coming the other direction (southbound). As a result of the collision his head hit her windshield, and he was not wearing a helmet.
In the police description V-1 is McCabe’s car and V-2 is Kamciyan’s motorcycle:

V-1 was northbound on Lyons Road in the left turn lane. V-2 was southbound on Lyons Road in the outside through lane. V-1 turned into the path of V-2, resulting in the front of V-2 impacting with the passenger’s side of V-1 near the front. D-2 was ejected from his vehicle and him head impacted with the front windshield before he fell to the ground. D-2 was not wearing a helmet. He was transported to Delray Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

According to the Sun-Sentinel, Kamciyan co-owned a pool and spa business in Fort Lauderdale.
West Boca News reported the accident shortly after it happened on our Facebook page, thanks to a volunteer.

Ordinarily in a collision like this fault would be placed on the driver making the left turn. It is unfortunately common that drivers do not notice motorcycles. At the same time there may be other reasons the accident happened. The police report does not indicate fault.

On the legal side, Florida law is quirky when it comes to wrongful death cases. It may be difficult for the family to recover.

Sweet Dewey’s Will Become “Boca’s Best BBQ & Smokehouse”

dewey-side-angle
Our favorite BBQ place is expanding and changing its name. The soon to be renamed Sweet Dewey’s is on the north side of Glades Road west of Lyons, between Stallone’s and Bamboo Wok. It will be renamed Boca’s Best BBQ & Smokehouse.

They are taking over the space formerly occupied by a nail salon adding about 1500 square feet. The new area will have seating for 60 customers. There will be a half-wall with a counter between the two spaces with an additional 10 or so bar stools to sit at the counter. This will more than triple the seating.
On the cooking side they will be adding a 10-foot smoker inside the existing space. This will allow them to prepare more types of food at the same time, quintuple the total amount they can cook, and will also include rotisseries.
The menu will expand. Most notably they will open for breakfast with omelets and more, and they are adding fried chicken to the lunch and dinner menus. Of course they will continue to feature the Sweet Dewey’s sauces.
The restaurant will close this Sunday through Wednesday for final remodeling, and will reopen on December 20th. They are hoping for a grand reopening on January 1st.
