Disappointing Response From Walmart

palmetto-walmart-sign
About three weeks ago we got good contact information for the incoming Walmart in West Boca. We sent e-mails to them asking questions about what they’re doing and why.

Update: A number of commenters seem to think we’re anti-Walmart. We’re not. We are Walmart customers and the author of this article often defends Walmart on issues like minimum wage. We are, however, anti-dishonesty.

Our stories have been positive about the reopening. But we’re disappointed that they’re not giving us any answers to our questions. They’re not even telling us they won’t answer. They’re just stalling. Or lying.
They gave us some initial details but not much:

· The store is undergoing a complete interior renovation which will allow it to convert to a 120K Supercenter with a full grocery section; all the renovations are staying within the existing box.
· The store will create 300 new jobs, with a hiring center that will open about 4-6 months prior to the store opening in September 2014.
· The store will offer a full selection of grocery, a deli, bakery and pharmacy.

On May 7th we asked some follow-up questions and were told they’d get back to us in a few days. A week later we noted that it had been more than a few days, and got another vague response the next day: “Sorry for the delay, we are working on getting you these answers!” That was 11 days ago.
Here are the questions we asked:

1. Can you describe how the new store will be different from:
a. The store in that location before it closed; and
b. The newer store 2.5 miles south, at Hillsboro and 441.
2. You indicate in your last message that the hiring center will open 4-6 months prior to the September opening. But 6 months prior would be in March, and 4 months prior is this month. Can you clarify that?
3. As I have the details, the West Boca location closed in 2008 and is now reopening roughly 6 years later. In that time Walmart spent roughly $700K in property tax on the location. Can you offer any insight into the business decision-making that went into spending that amount on a closed store? In the same vein, what led to the decision to reopen it? Were there demographic or economic changes in the community that influenced the decision?
4. The Coconut Creek location carries ammunition and hunting gear, but no actual firearms. Will the West Boca location also offer those items, and will it sell firearms?
5. Do you think the new West Boca store will reduce business volume at the Coconut Creek store, and if so, by how much?
6. We’ve read about Walmart implementing new technologies in some stores to serve customers better. Are there any particular new technologies that will be offered in the new store that are not presently offered in Coconut Creek?
7. A lot of our readers (including myself) are happy about this store reopening because it’s a hassle to drive to the Coconut Creek store and we don’t like the parking lot setup. Had you heard that from West Boca customers and did that play a role in the decision to reopen?
I might think of more questions, but these are a good start. I understand you may not be able to answer all of them, but I’d appreciate anything you can tell me.

We’ve followed up with them twice and we keep getting vague delays. At this point we’ve given up. They’re not going to answer our questions.
If they had just said that it was their business practice not to answer such questions, we could have lived with that. Lying to us is disappointing. And yes, when you tell someone you’ll get them answers in a few days, no answers twenty days later makes it a lie.

What's Going On At …. ?

We get a lot of questions about what’s going on at various locations.

What’s happening at Glades and 441? What about the old Walmart? What are they doing in Shadowood?

We’ve covered quite a few of these, so here’s a summary:
1. The Old Walmart at Palmetto Park and 441
walmart1
Yes, they’re reopening the old Walmart on Palmetto Park Road. We’ve been in touch with them and were hoping to get some more answers but have been disappointed in their delays. The short story is it’ll reopen in a few months.
You can see our latest update on the construction progress here: West Boca Walmart Update.
2. The Shadowood Parking Lot at Glades and 441
They’re adding an outbuilding for a larger Walgreens.

3. The southeast corner of 441 and Glades
They are doing something at Westwinds of Boca, but we’re not 100% sure what. This is the plaza with Home Depot and Publix.

There is a plan to add a “future development” in the plaza. However it’s not clear if they’re doing that now. We also have sources telling us there were problems with homeless people, street beggars and others in this area, and that it is being cleaned out to address that.
4. Loggers Run Plaza
We don’t see anything happening on the ground yet, but it looks like a new outbuilding will be built near the Wendy’s in Loggers Run Plaza for a Dunkin’ Donuts and another store to be named later.
Others
There’s a new cell tower coming to the north end of South County Regional Park near the Boca Shores entrance.
YouFit is coming to Sandalfoot Square. The opening date is unknown.
Hobby Lobby is coming to West Boca Square, replacing the old Beall’s. It should open mid-fall.
They’re making great progress on the new Chabad at Boca Greens. We passed by the other day and it’s growing.
We’ve got nothing to report on the closed Outback Steakhouse, or if anything will fill in the old Denny’s in Westwinds of Boca.
If you know of any new business developmetns,

YouFit Coming to Sandalfoot

A few readers have asked us about a possible YouFit gym opening in the Sandalfoot Square shopping plaza. We contacted YouFit and they responded. Yes they’re coming, but no they don’t know when yet.

Thank you for inquiring about Youfit Health Clubs! Youfit has recently secured the space for their new West Boca location located on 441 in the Sandalfoot Plaza, next to the Western Beef (The sign is currently above the location).
Unfortunately at the moment we do not have any information on timelines for pre-sale or a grand opening. In the future we will definitely have more information on when the location will be scheduled to open. You can check our website at www.youfit.com under the “Clubs” tab to see our locations coming soon, or call us at 561.338.0600 for more information.

New Cell Tower? Yamato at Boca Shores

20140522-104642.jpg
A reader tipped us off to a new cell tower being deployed inside the Kimberly Substation on the north end of South County Regional Park. The tower is up with equipment to follow.
A few work trucks were scattered around the intersection in front of Boca Shores and the park’s Yamato exit.

Here’s a panorama view looking south from the Boca Shores entrance:

And this shot, also from the Boca Shores side, shoes a couple workers and a small utility area marked off.

Our tipster was curious which cell phone company might be involved. We asked but no one there could tell us. However, one if the guys had an AT&T logo on his shirt. Maybe that’s just a coincidence.
The Kimberly Substation is one of those critical pieces of infrastructure that most of tend not to notice.

But of course, those looking for a secluded place to drink some beers and then discard the refuse know it’s there.
