Truck Fire Shuts 441

IMG_7175.JPG
Several readers contacted us earlier about a major traffic jam on 441 northbound near Clint Moore, affecting Clint Moore as well.
We heard that it was caused by a dump truck on fire. One reader sent us pictures.

The incident was north of Clint Moore, close to Atlantic. There was also a report of an accident at Clint Moore and 441 where a PBSO car hit a man on a motorcycle.

Accident at Lyons and Clint Moore

lyons-clint-moore
A reader just reported to us that there’s an accident at Lyons and Clint Moore. From the photo above it looks like the collision was fairly minor and hopefully there are no serious injuries. Update: Additional reader photo added at bottom.
However, it does appear to be causing traffic problems at the intersection, per Google Maps:

We recommend avoiding the intersection for at least half an hour.
From the photo it looks like a Mercedes S Class met with a Lexus RX, and we think we see airbag deployment on the Lexus passenger side.
Update: Another reader sent us a shot from a different angle.

West Boca Man Arrested for Fourth DUI?

darren-hazzon-dui
Darren Hazzon (45) of Villa San Remo (Lyons south of Clint Moore) was arrested late last night on a DUI charge we don’t often see: “4th or Subsequent Offense.”
It takes a lot of work to pick up four or more DUIs. Mr. Hazzon may be on his way to that Hall of Shame.
We researched his record as best we could. Back in 2001 he was arrested for DUI causing injury in Palm Beach County. However that case resulted in a “wet reckless” with the DUI charge being dropped. That generally doesn’t count as a prior DUI offense.
hazzon-2001
We found three incidents in the Tampa area. The image below is from an unreliable website that posts arrest information.
darren-hazzon-tampa
We checked the official court records. They show DUI arrests in 2007 and 2010, but the 2011 incident does not appear to have been a real DUI arrest.
hazzon-tampa-cases
The 2007 case was resolved with a “no-contest” plea in 2008, with probation and a license suspension.
hazzon-2008
The 2010 case was resolved again with a no-contest plea. His license was supposedly suspended for five years.
hazzon-2011
The 2011 case (refusing to submit to a balance test) was dropped by prosecutors:
hazzon-2011-2
So far we only count two prior DUI convictions. It may be that Mr. Hazzon has other ones out there but we haven’t found them yet. What’s puzzling is how he was not charged with driving on a suspended license on the 2011 incident or this most recent incident.

John Hartman: School Board Candidate

johnhartman
We had lunch yesterday with John Hartman at It’s All Greek on Clint Moore near 441. He is one of three candidates for Palm Beach County School Board. District 3 runs mostly north of Clint Moore and west of Military Trail. We previously interviewed candidate Dave Mech, and hope to meet with incumbent Karen Brill as well.
A teacher, Hartman sees a number of things wrong with the current school system and he demonstrated a clear understanding of it from the inside. He presents an interesting contrast to Mech, who seems motivated more by his pending lawsuit against the school district and less aware of practical concerns we’ve heard from many parents.

See Hartman’s campaign website.

Hartman is particularly focused on Common Core, corruption in the school district, and charter school abuses. He recognizes that the Somerset Academy charter school near the Canyon developments is popular and does well, but feels the current charter system fails on accountability. We’re not sure the regular public schools are much better on that, but he is persuasive.
The real race seems to be between Hartman and incumbent Karen Brill. He notes two key distinctions. First, Hartman is an educator, while Brill is a real estate agent. He feels that having a background in education makes him more qualified to serve on the school board. We aren’t sure about that but he certainly seems qualified.
Second, Hartman is opposed to Common Core. He describes Brill as leading the charge for it and points to her involvement in the “Greater Florida Consortium of School Boards” as evidence of that. We hope to ask Brill to clarify, but the evidence is compelling:

The full pdf of that document is at bottom.
We would also note a third distinction – Hartman is clearly a political outsider. You can read more about Brill on her website, but it appears she is well-connected within the establishment.
On the politics, this looks like a big climb for Hartman. While he does have a strong message, he doesn’t seem to have a clear plan for communicating that message to voters. We hope to meet with Brill next.

Truck Rollover at Clint Moore and 441 (1 pm today)

truck-clint-moore
Thanks to several readers for alerting us to an accident earlier today (roughly 1 pm) at Clint Moore and 441. A truck overturned just east of the intersection on 441.
And thanks especially to one reader who sent us the two pictures, above and below.
