Restaurant Inspections: A Rough Month

Several local restaurants had more than 20 violations in the past month, with East Boca’s Jamison’s Pizza topping the list at 30 (7 high priority). Just behind that with 27 violations, 7 high priority, was Junior’s in Mizner Park.

Junior’s in Mizner Park

Jamison’s biggest problem was a stop sale for “temperature abuse” involving not keeping “potentially hazardous” foods cold enough. This is similar to a violation inspectors reported six months ago.
Junior’s also had temperature issues:

Potentially hazardous (time/temperature control for safety) food cold held at greater than 41 degrees Fahrenheit.Flip top fry cooler-Liquid eggs (50°F – Cold Holding); Flip top fry cooler-diced cooked ham (47°F – Cold Holding); Flip top fry cooler-cooked onions (47°F – Cold Holding); Flip top fry cooler-sliced deli turkey (50°F – Cold Holding). All products prepped at 9:30. Cold holding temperatures were at 11:30. Moved all products to walk in freezer. All temperatures were under 41°F at 12:30.
Potentially hazardous (time/temperature control for safety) food cooked/heated yesterday/on a previous day not cooled from 135 degrees Fahrenheit to 41 degrees Fahrenheit within a total of 6 hours. Cooked Corn Beef temperature range from 47°-57°, Cooked Brisket temperature range from 47°-54°F and Cooked Pastrami ranged from 47°-55°F all cooling overnight in the walk in cooler.

Others with 20 or more violations include:

  • Lemongrass at Mizner Park (25 violations, 6 high priority)
  • Palm Beach Bagel on Yamato (23, 7)
  • Kasi on Yamato (22, 3)
  • Sal’s Italian – Yamato at Congress (21, 10)
  • Bluefin Sushi Thai Grill – Yamato at Congress (20, 3)
  • Boca Indian Grill in Mission Bay (20, 4)
  • Odyssey Diner, Jog Road, Delray (20, 4)

On the good news side of things, KFC on Federal Highway and Tropical Smoothie on Sample in Coral Springs both recorded perfect inspections.
Near perfect inspections were recorded by several restaurants, each with 1 minor violation, including: Moon’s Tavern in Boca Greens, Juice & Java on St. Andrews, Villa Rosano on Clint Moore, and Ruth’s Chris Steak House in Mizner Park.

Pho Boca should open soon.

We also noticed a licensing inspection for Pho Boca in mid-February. It’s on Glades west of Lyons between Stallone’s and Bamboo Wok. For a licensing inspection it was not very good, with 12 violations including 1 high priority. We don’t think they’re open yet and hopefully they’ll get it all straightened out soon. Pho is a classic Vietnamese dish and we can’t wait to try the place.
Ouzo Bay in Mizner Park had a licensing inspection in mid-February, with 5 violations, 1 high priority. We don’t think they’re open yet either but they seem to be close.
For Japanese fans, there was a licensing inspection (4, 1) for Ramen Lab Eatery on NE 2nd in East Boca. Another one we can’t wait to try.
Looks like a new Kosher place on Sandalfoot called Chef 2 Go / Gersh (3, 0)
Other notables were:

  • Hurricane Grill in Mission Bay (18 violations, 3 high priority)
  • Sushi Yoshee on 441 near SW 18th (18, 2)

Inspections: The Good, the Bad, and the Hashi

There were some very good and some not so good inspections in the past few weeks. We posted on Facebook about the temporary closure of PF Chang’s a couple weeks ago. That was one of the worst inspections in this report with 22 violations including 8 high priority and live roaches.
The most notable in West Boca was Hashi Sushi Thai in Shadowood, which had 24 mostly minor violations. Although it’s a big number, there was nothing terrible in the report and they did not even receive a warning. This is not the first bad inspection for Hashi, which did worse last year.
Schwartz’s Deli & Grill on Lyons in Coconut Creek had the worst numbers in this report, with 26 violations including 9 high priority and a stop sale:

  • Dishmachine not sanitizing properly. Discontinue use of dishmachine for sanitizing and set up manual sanitization until dishmachine is repaired and sanitizing properly.
  • Employee failed to wash hands before changing gloves and/or putting on gloves to work with food. Cook
  • Food stored in ice used for drinks. See stop sale. Found in ice machine.
  • Live, small flying insects in kitchen, food preparation area, or food storage area. Throughout establishment.
  • Potentially hazardous (time/temperature control for safety) food cold held at greater than 41 degrees Fahrenheit. Sour cream 49°F in server station cooler. See stop sale.
  • Raw animal foods not properly separated from one another based upon minimum required cooking temperature in reach-in freezer – all products not commercially packaged. Raw meat over mozzarella sticks in Midea unit in cook line. Employee correct **Corrected On-Site**
  • Raw animal foods not properly separated from one another based upon minimum required cooking temperature in walk-in freezer – all products not commercially packaged. Open case Raw chicken over French fries.
  • Spray bottle with chemical/toxic substance stored near/on/above food preparation surface or food. Degreaser and detergent on top shelf of cleaned food pan.
  • Stop Sale issued on potentially hazardous (time/temperature control for safety) food due to temperature abuse. Sour cream 49° in server station cooler.

Punjab Indian and Basilic Vietnamese Grill on Federal Highway also had big numbers. Punjab had 24 violations, 6 of them high priority. Basilic had 21 and 6.
Rounding out the 20+ category was New Golden China on Palmetto near Powerline with 20 violations, 2 high priority.
We also like to talk about the good news and there’s a lot of it. Leading off is Stallone’s on Glades just west of Lyons with a perfect inspection. Stallone’s is our second favorite Italian restaurant after Stella’s. Jersey Mike’s Subs on St. Andrews, Monet Cafe on Palmetto, and Vinny’s All Day Cafe at Yamato and Jog both also had perfect inspections.
Near perfect inspections were recorded by Casa L’Italien (Yamato at Lakeridge), Tijuana Flats on Powerline, Lucille’s (Yamato and Jog), and the Southwinds golf course clubhouse.
Other inspections worth mentioning include:

  • The new Temper Grille at Clint Moore and 441 had 1 violation in its licensing inspection
  • Bolay in Polo Club Shoppes and Moe’s on NW 19th each had 1 violation in their licensing inspections
  • TGI Friday’s in Mission Bay had 2 violations, both high priority
  • Chen’s Yokohama (Boca Lyons Plaza) and El Balcon de las Americas (Sandalfoot) each had 2 minor violations. Chow Thai in Sandalfoot had 2 violations, 1 high priority.
  • Shen’s Peking (Boca Lyons) had 3 violations, 1 high priority. Cannoli Kitchen (Powerline) and Tricky Dicks (Sandalfoot) each had 3 minor violations.
  • Brio at Town Center Circle had 4 violations, 3 of them high priority

  • Morton’s Steakhouse (Town Center Circle) had 9 violations, 5 high priority
  • Gary Woo Express (Yamato near 441) had 10 violations (1 high priority)
  • City Fish Market (Glades near the Turnpike) and China Cafe (Loggers Run) each had 11 violations, 2 high priority.
  • Padrino’s (Mission Bay) and Rack’s (Mizner Park) each had 14 violations, 3 high priority
  • Puccini’s Pizzeria on Yamato had 15 violations, 4 high priority

40+ Violations for Two East Boca Restaurants

Basilic Vietnamese Grill; image by Google

Basilic Vietnamese Grill on Federal Highway and Whistle Stop on Spanish River Blvd had the worst inspections for the start of 2017. Whistle Stop had 43 total violations including 5 marked high priority. Basilic had 40 violations but with 12 of them marked high priority – including a stop sale and rodent droppings – it seems more serious.

Basilic had two follow-up inspections within a few days after the bad inspection. These were far from perfect and another follow-up is expected.
Closer to home we were sorry to see one of our local favorites in West Boca, Saito’s (Glades & Lyons) with a big number 27 violations. On the bright side there were only four high priority violations and they weren’t terrible. No follow-up was required by the inspector.
The other notably bad inspection was for the Chipotle in Turtle Run on 441 in Coral Springs. They were temporarily closed on January 9th, apparently due to:
Wastewater backing up through floor drains. Observed underneath the three compartment sink. Observed employees traveling and standing in water on floor while washing dishes and retrieving clean dishes for prepping.
On the good news side of things, Burt & Max’s reopened in Delray Marketplace. We ate there on Friday and had a good meal. Their inspection on January 6th showed only 3 violations.
Perfect inspections were reported for a few of the facilities in the Polo Club community, Boca Woods, and inside the Marriott at Town Center Circle. Stonebridge Country Club had a near perfect inspection with just two minor violations.
Jersey Mike’s Subs in Somerset Shoppes (Glades & Lyons) had a near perfect licensing inspection with only one minor violation. Capital Grille at Town Center also did well with just one violation.
As usual our spreadsheet is below. We missed last week so we did two weeks together.

It was a pretty good week for inspections without a lot of bad news. The worst of it was Mozart Cafe off Powerline with 21 violations, 5 high priority.

  • Employee failed to wash hands before changing gloves and/or putting on gloves to work with food. – kitchen, food preparer. – dish machine operator.

  • Servers handled soiled dishes or utensils and then picked up plated food, served food, or prepared a beverage without washing hands.

They had a call-back inspection the next day which still showed 8 violations including 4 high priority.
The other not-great inspections were all in Delray, including Ho Ho Chinese, The Sea Southeast Asian Bistro (on Jog near Morikami), and 4 Brothers Italian.
In the good news, the new Rappy’s Deli (on Military Trail) and Bakery of France (SW 18th) each had just one minor violation. Grand Lux (Town Center) and Thick and Thin (Sandalfoot) also did well, each with only two minor violations. Cheesecake Factory (near Town Center) had three minor violations.
Other notables include Bruce’s of Great Neck (Boca Greens) and Miller’s Ale House (Glades near Lyons), each with 7 violations, 3 high priority.

The relatively new Pollo Tropical (441 at Palmetto) had a pretty good inspection with 5 violations, 2 of them high priority. “My Delicious Deli” on Palmetto at Powerline had a licensing inspection with 4 violations (1 high priority).
Other good news includes licensing inspections for Soho Subs on Wiles in Coral Springs (1 minor violation) and La Gelateria in Royal Palm Place.
The worst of the week were the six places with more than 10 violations:
