Restaurant Inspections for Early April

boca-indian-grill
The biggest news for West Boca in this week’s report is the licensing inspection for Boca Indian Grill, completed with only two minor violations. The licensing inspection usually signals that a place is about to open. We were in Mission Bay Plaza after the 4/6 inspection and it did not seem to be open yet but we will be checking on it soon.
Update – Sunday afternoon still not open.
The data also shows a perfect licensing inspection on Federal Highway for “New York Grilled Cheese.” We were in that plaza on Friday and saw it but didn’t think to go in.

The best routine inspection for a restaurant in West Boca was for Cilluffo’s on SW 18th by Howard’s Market. They had only one minor violation.
Wendy’s on Glades in Boca Lyons Plaza had two minor violations.
Brickyard Microbrewery on Palmetto Park Road did well with 3 minor violations.

Turning to the not-so-good news:

Odyssey Diner in Delray had the biggest total number this week, with 20 violations, but none were marked high priority. The diner has a history of poor inspections including a whopping 58 violations last year.

The worst inspection this week goes to 3 G’s Deli in Delray Beach. They had 12 violations with 5 marked high priority including hand washing and food temperature issues leading to a stop sale on a couple items:

  • Employee cracked raw shell eggs and then handled ready-to-eat food and/or clean equipment or utensils without washing hands.
  • Employee failed to wash hands before changing gloves and/or putting on gloves to work with food. Inspector discussed importance of proper personal hygiene, handwashing and glove use. Employee washed hands properly and put on new gloves.
  • Potentially hazardous (time/temperature control for safety) food cooked/heated yesterday/on a previous day not cooled from 135 degrees Fahrenheit to 41 degrees Fahrenheit within a total of 6 hours. Food has been cooling overnight. See stop sale. Stuffed cabbages 69°-76° in walk-in cooler. Cooked corned beef 48°-53° in reach-in cooler at front counter. Both items cooling overnight.
  • Potentially hazardous (time/temperature control for safety) food held using time as a public health control not discarded at the end of the 4-hour/6-hour period. Employee indicated that creamers and butters return to refrigeration after breakfast shift. Inspector discussed proper use of Time as a Public Health Control. **Corrective Action Taken**
  • Stop Sale issued on potentially hazardous (time/temperature control for safety) food due to temperature abuse. Stuffed cabbages 69°-76° in walk-in cooler. Cooked corned beef 48°-53° in reach-in cooler at front counter. Both items cooling overnight. Person in Charge discarded foods.

Park Ave BBQ (aka PA BBQ) on Dixie just south of Glades had 12 violations including 2 marked high priority. The worst of it was some minor food temperature issues and small flying insects in outdoor storage. The next-day follow-up was nearly perfect. Their inspection in August was worse, with four high priority including insects in the kitchen and rodent droppings in a storage area.
Other notables in this week’s report include:

  • Maggiano’s near Town Center (11 violations, 2 high priority)
  • Blue Agave on 441 in Parkland (9, 1)
  • Ruven’s in Delray (8, 0)
  • Ben’s Kosher Deli on 441 at Clint Moore (7, 2)
  • Chili’s on St. Andrews (6, 2)
  • Lucille’s BBQ in Woodfield Plaza (5, 2)
  • Chez Marie in Polo Club Shoppes (5, 3)

Roaches at the Goat? Inspection Report

The biggest number of the week goes to Gluttonous Goat on SE Mizner Blvd. The report shows they had 23 total violations. While only three were marked high priority, one in particular was not good:

  • Raw animal food stored over ready-to-eat food, raw fish over sauce in walk in cooler.
  • Roach activity present as evidenced by live roaches found, 7 live roaches in gasket of unused reach in cooler on cookline. 1 live in unused reach in cooler on cookline.
  • Small flying insects in kitchen area.

There was a follow-up inspection the next day with no roaches, but it included a time extension for the live flying insects in the kitchen.
Depending on how you look at things, that may not have been the worst inspection. The Hilton Garden Inn on Congress had a smaller total with 18 violations, but 7 were high priority, one was marked a repeat violation, and there was a stop sale on four items for temperature abuse:

  • All potentially hazardous (time/temperature control for safety) foods in reach-in cooler cold/counter held at greater than 41 degrees Fahrenheit. Cubed sausage 70°, diced ham 70°, cut tomatoes 69°, cut spinach 71° in metal pan set above flip-top cooler. Egg mix 71°, raw shell eggs – ambient temp 73° on counter across from cookline. Operator placed all items over ice. **Corrective Action Taken** **Repeat Violation**
  • Employee failed to wash hands beforechanging gloves and/or putting on gloves to work with food. Inspector discussed importance of proper hand washing. Employee washed hands. **Corrective Action Taken**
  • Employee touching ready-to-eat food with their bare hands – food was not being heated as a sole ingredient to 145 degrees F or immediately added to other ingredients to be cooked/heated to the minimum required temperature to allow bare hand contact. Establishment has no approved Alternative Operating Procedure. Observed employee cutting melon with bare hands.
  • Potentially hazardous (time/temperature control for safety) food cold held at greater than 41 degrees Fahrenheit. Butter packets 67°, cream cheese packets 67° on buffet. Inspector provided Time As A Public Health Control paperwork. **Corrective Action Taken**
  • Potentially hazardous (time/temperature control for safety) food cooked/heated yesterday/on a previous day not cooled from 135 degrees Fahrenheit to 41 degrees Fahrenheit within a total of 6 hours. Food has been cooling overnight. See stop sale. Mashed potatoes 49°, marinara sauce 49°, chicken soup 50°, cooked Mac and cheese 48°-50° in reach-in cooler across from cookline.
  • Presence of insects, rodents, or other pests. Observed ants on wall near cookline hand wash sink in kitchen.
  • Stop Sale issued on potentially hazardous (time/temperature control for safety) food due to temperature abuse. Mashed potatoes 49°, marinara sauce 49°, chicken soup 50°, cooked Mac and cheese 48°-50° in reach-in cooler across from cookline. Operator discarded foods.

The next day’s follow-up inspection was much better, though there were still some temperature issues and ants.

Talia’s Tuscan Table on Dixie Highway also had a somewhat rough inspection, with 18 violations, 5 high priority including the dish washing machine not sanitizing properly, hand washing, temperature, food storage, and inadequate sneeze guards on the buffet. But overall it didn’t look as bad as the numbers suggest.
Offerdahl’s on Military Trail north of Clint Moore had 16 violations, 3 high priority related to hand washing and food temperature issues.
Good News
On the good news side of the inspections, the Publix Aprons Cooking School in the Polo Club Shoppes had a perfect inspection – no violations.

Moon’s Tavern in Boca Greens recorded another excellent inspection, this time with just one minor violation. Last year they had a perfect inspection.
Other notables include a few not-great inspections in Coconut Creek’s Promenade: Bar Louie (15 violations, 5 high priority); Red Rock Oasis & Grill (14, 3), Ethos Greek Bistro (12, 2), and Lime Fresh Mexican Grill (10, 4). Saito’s in the same plaza had eight violations but zero were high priority.
As usual, our spreadsheet for this report is below.

Rats in Golf? Nope – In the Kitchen

The worst restaurant inspection of the week goes to the Ocean Breeze Golf Course in East Boca. Inspectors closed the restaurant there for a day after finding rodents in the kitchen. They found “4 dead rodents [and 1 live rodent] in trap on floor under cookline.” We’ve been there. They have a good hot dog and beer deal.
That wasn’t the only problem. They also had some temperature and handwashing issues, for a total of 14 violations including 3 marked high priority.
There were a couple of bigger numbers in and near West Boca. Boca Pita Express on Beracasa Way had 18 violations, but only one was high priority.

The Whale in Parkland (441 just south of the county line) had 16 violations, but again only one was high priority.
World of Beer in Promenade (Coconut Creek) had 14 violations with 2 high priority. We didn’t realize they serve their own food, because we often see servers coming from the other restaurants in Promenade.
lucky-palace-window
Lucky Palace in West Boca Square (the Target plaza) had 12 violations, 3 high priority. None of them looked terrible to us.
Back in East Boca, Tesser’s Deli had the second worst overall inspection in this week’s report. They had 13 violations including 7 marked high priority, mostly involving food temperatures, food storage and hand washing.
Good News
The best this week was also in a golf club, though fancier. Boca Grove Golf & Tennis managed a perfect inspection with zero violations.
Good inspections were reported for several places.
1 violation:
Jersey Mike’s, 1200 Yamato (near Broken Sound)
The Salad Spot, 690 Yamato (at Congress near the train station)
2 violations:
Subway on Lyons in Coconut Creek
Einstein Bagels in Shadowood
Panda Express on 441 in Coral Springs
Wendy’s in Boca Lyons Plaza
3 violations:
Four Seasons in Lakeside Centre (Glades at Boca Rio)
El Paso on Wiles in Coral Springs
Zinburger in Town Center Mall
Kasi and Subway at 690 Yamato at Congress
Other notables include La Bamba, which recovered from last year’s horrible inspection to have 7 violations on this one.
Hunan City at Yamato and Lakeridge had a passable 8 violations (zero high priority).
Hurricane Grill in Mission Bay had 9 violations, 3 of them high priority.
Bonaccino Cafe in Town Center also had 9 violations, 4 high priority. This was also a recovery from a terrible inspection last year.

More Good Restaurant Inspections

This week’s restaurant inspection report is a good one. There were some perfect inspections, and no really big numbers or bad inspections.

Leading off is Holloway’s Irish Pub, next to Carrabba’s in the Boca Pointe plaza on the northeast corner of SW 18th and Powerline. They had a perfect inspection and they’ve done it before. We’ve only seen good inspections for them and it’s more than a couple times.
Lucky Express on Clint Moore; image by Google

Good inspections were also notched by:

  • Wendy’s on Military Trail in Deerfield Beach (1 minor violation)
  • Vinny’s All Day Cafe in Regency Court, aka Woodfield Plaza (2 violations, 1 high priority)
